Trail hiking is a great, year round activity for the whole family. One of the best places to trail hike in Indiana is Southwestway Park. Located at 7550 Mann Road Indianapolis Southwestway is well worth the commute from anywhere in the metro area. Southwestway offers a variety of hiking aptitudes, superb scenery, family fun, and much more.
No matter what your skill level Southwestway Park has trails to fit your desires. If you are just starting out or prefer a relaxing pace the northern path is the one you’ll want. Follow the gently winding gravel path northward and you’ll find yourself meandering along the edge of the tree line.
Fields of wild grasses grow to the west providing ample opportunities to view butterflies, insects, and birds in the warmer months. This is also a great trail to walk in the colder months. Since it is next to and not under the trees it provides the benefit of full sunlight along with wind protection.
If you prefer a bit more of a challenge, you will want to choose the eastern trails. These trails are inside the woods. They crisscross and branch from one end of the park to the other following the White River as their eastern border. As you trek down the slopes and up the rises of these trails you will notice all manner of plants and trees. You may have the opportunity to see the ample wild life of the park as well.
Southwestway is home to deer, rabbits, herons, woodpeckers, turtles, and many more. If you walk along the river bank you may even have a chance to see one of the American Bald Eagles that nest along the White River. Warm weather or cool, you are guaranteed to have some picture perfect moments traveling along these trails.
For those of you who enjoy a real workout you’ll want to follow the trails to the far south. Here you’ll enter the wood line on an upward slant and continue to climb. Be prepared for your heart rate to rise as you traverse the steep slopes and valleys of the southern trails. These trails offer some of the most breath taking views in the park.
From the tops of the hills you will have an amazing view of the surrounding park. At some places you can see above the canopy of the trees as the hills roll away before you. The lush trees and abundant plant life offer beauty at every turn. If you enjoy photography this is definitely the place for you to see.
Hiking is, of course, not the only activity to take pleasure in at Southwestway. There are newly finished biking trails throughout the park. The kids can enjoy a fully functional playground featuring two rock walls, rope monkey bars, giant slides, swings, and more. There are also several baseball fields available for play. Horses and dogs are welcome at the park too.
If you live in or around Indianapolis, make it a point to visit Southwestway Park. The hiking is magnificent, the scenery supreme, and there is much fun to be had. Bring your kids, bring your dogs, bring your bikes, or your horses, and be prepared to have a grand time.
