California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has come to Russia to meet President Dmitry Medvedev and high-tech executives, as well as to visit Russia’s “Silicon Valley” of Skolkovo outside Moscow.
He is taking part in the Global Innovation Partnership Forum, featuring such Russian and American businesses as Rosnano, the Skolkovo Foundation, Global Technology Symposium and Silicon Valley Bank.
Having arrived at Skolkovo, Schwarzenegger discussed issues of innovation and modernization with President Medvedev, not only in technology, but also in sport and culture. He also talked about Russia as a new democracy.
Ahead of business there were some light moments. On arrival in Moscow, Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote an entry in his Twitter microblog, “Just landed in Moscow. Beautiful day. Can’t wait to see Pres Medvedev.”
The Russian President, whose English-language Twitter account is KremlinRussia_E, was quick to answer, “@Schwarzenegger, welcome to Moscow. Looking forward to meeting you and your delegation at @skolkovo.” Dmitry Medvedev and Arnold Schwarzenegger have also become mutual followers on Twitter.
These two have an established relationship. In fact, Medvedev visited Schwarzenegger in Silicon Valley in June. At that time, the governor promised: “I will be back to Moscow.”
Since his arrival here, he has begun publishing some pictures in his Twitter. Some of them include him catching the Moscow Metro – showing solidarity with the Muscovites.
He has also shared his impressions of a trip to Skolkovo in a “Chaika”, a retro Soviet car: “Riding with President Medvedev in his great car. You’re a great driver, Mr. President!”
Schwarzenegger noted that he had already been to Moscow several times: on vacation, for the filming of the movie “Red Heat”, and to meet his Russian friends. “However, I could never have imagined coming here as the California governor“, he confessed.
For Russian people, Arnold Schwarzenegger is not only the governor of the State of California; he is the Terminator, an international superstar. Many Russians have grown up watching his movies, learning them by heart. He is an important figure, a symbol of freedom to many people here.
Schwarzenegger himself has some personal ties with Russia. According to “the Governator”, it was a Russian heavyweight champion, Yuri Vlasov, who inspired him to become who he is today. After two days in Moscow the California Governor’s delegation, not including Arnold Schwarzenegger himself, will fly to the city of Kazan for further talks with local businesse
