That poor old Scrabble game! It hasn’t been broken free of the closet in years! Once a classic favorite the game now has a missing piece or family members have simply lost interest. Scrabble tiles have been made into many things just for those reasons. Use them to make desk plaques, address plaques, jewelry and much more. Save your Scrabble tiles from their terrible fate and use them to make a little girl happy! Any young girl will adore a cute belt made with the famous tiles and the belt can be used to convey a message.
If your child has an old belt she doesn’t mind changing it will be a breeze to create the Scrabble belt. Use a narrow belt that accommodates the tiles just right or use a wider belt for a different look. Simply center the Scrabble tiles down the middle of the belt. Tiles can be easily glued onto most belts with hot glue.
Since the tiles are blank on one side, and have a letter on the other, it’s really easy to create the message you want. Spell out a child’s name, the name of his school, or even a seasonal message, like “Merry Christmas”. Use letters that won’t be needed for the message on the belt as blanks. Letters like an “x”, “j”, “q” and “w” aren’t used as much as some letters so they can be turned over and used as blanks.
Space the tiles evenly apart or butt them together. Butt letters of words together then leave large spaces between the words. Using these types of techniques you can make any number of belt designs. It’s a good idea to figure out how many tiles you’ll need, and arrange them on a table to spell out what you want, before attaching them to the belt. You don’t want to get to the end of the belt only to find you don’t have one of the letters you need.
If you don’t already have the belt it’s really easy to make one using thick vinyl. It’s available in clear shades as well as a variety of colors. Find it at fabric stores and some home improvement retailers. Purchase a belt buckle hardware kit at a craft store to finish the belt. Follow the instructions included to easily attach the buckle to the Scrabble belt.
A really simple belt you can make for a young girl is from a piece of magnetic sheeting. Available at craft stores the sheeting allows you to make a very simplistic belt that’s quick and easy. Simply cut a strip long enough to go around the child’s waist and add a couple of inches to that measurement. Stick a button magnet, or square magnet, to each end of the belt. Peel away the cover of the magnetic sheeting, position the tiles, and the belt is finished! With this belt, though, you must cover the entire sticky surface after peeling away the covering.
Most any little girl would love a Scrabble belt. They look great with denims, skirts, shorts and other outfits. She can make it herself so it will be the only one just like it in the world!
