Pulau Tioman or the island of Tioman off the East Cast of the Malaysian Peninsular, offers a wide and abundant variety of water sports. The holiday maker will find a low cost island with fairly basic facilities unless staying at the 5 star Berjaya Tioman Beach, Golf & Spa Resort.
The little towns like Tekek, Salang and Air Batang lay scattered around the island close to the sandy white beaches. The towns offer a friendly atmosphere and lots of facilities for water sport enthusiasts. The island, located in the South China Sea, is only diveable on the west side of Tioman island. The under currents and wave action on the east side are too dangerous for the average diver. Almost every town has various operators, with local and international dive guides, dive master and dive instructors.
Scuba Dive Courses at Pulau Tioman
All main dive organization can be found on the island, PADI, SSI, NAUI and BSAC, TDI, IANTD and others. Courses range from open water diver, advanced open water diver all the way to nitrox, trimix and rebreather courses. Underwater photography seems to be very popular as camera use is becoming more popular too. Scuba courses are fairly cheap compared to other parts of the world. Most dive courses start in front of the dive school in the shallow waters of the house reefs.
Snorkeling at Tioman Island
For the non-diver snorkeling is the next best thing, and the snorkel options here are endless. The shallow reefs offer a large variety of fish and coral life. Nearly all scuba dive centers offer snorkel trips.
Scuba Diving Pulau Tioman
Scuba diving has been the most popular activity around the island. Various coral reefs are hardly dived and left untouched by local divers. Deliberately sunken ship wrecks lay on the shallow bottom of the Underwater Marine Park. These wrecks form ideal fish habitats, perfect dive sites for any scuba diver. Tioman’s most popular dive sites are Pulau Chebeh, Pulau Labas, Pulau Renggis, Pulau Sepoi, Pulau Tulai, Golden Reef, Genting Bay, Malang Rock, Tiger Reef, Bahara Rock. Scuba dive and snorkel schools can be found all over the island.
None of the dive sites are really deep and maximum depths of 25 to 30 meters are seldom reached, perfect for beginners and advanced divers. However further out at sea there is an underwater gorge not too far from Pulau Labas where deep dives to 70 meters can be done. Not a very interesting dive, but great practice grounds for technical divers.
Dive Equipment Tip
Tioman is an island, and the large amount of dive centers offer quality equipment, but when bringing personal equipment, also bring personal spare parts, as on the island replacements are scares.
There are some awesome underwater wrecks to be visited some with high historical value. HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse lay in less than 50Nm from Pulau Tioman. The South China Sea is scattered with sunken treasure.
A few liveaboard operators work from Singapore, but this is still a pretty much undiscovered part of the world for liveaboards.
Tioman is an enjoyable, fairly inexpensive holiday island where water sport lovers and their families are welcomed by warm hearted local communities.
