Ron Mueck is an Australian sculptor who started out as both a model maker and puppeteer for children’s television and films. See a short video of his remarkable work here. The most interesting works, to my mind, are shown in the last minute of this three-and-a-half minute video. Often it’s the scale of the works as well as the detail which is so striking.
After credits on the film Labyrinth and the series The StorytellerMueck moved away from making models, props and animatronics. He gained recognition for his sculptures in London when the collector and gallery owner Charles Saatchi began collecting his work and commissioning new sculptures. At the time, in the mid-1990s, Mueck was working with his mother-in-law, Paula Rego, making small figures to feature in a tableau she was exhibiting at London’s Hayward Gallery. Rego introduced him to Charles Saatchi and from thenon Mueck steadily gained recognition for his art.
