Located in the Kansas City, Kansas metropolitan area is the City of Lenexa. Once an agricultural based community, Lenexa is now known for its incredible and creative annual festivals like the barbecue battle, the chili challenge and the spinach festival.
A Brief History of Lenexa’s Relationship with Spinach
Lenexa was once a thriving rural community that consisted in part of Belgium immigrants who survived by working the city’s fertile farmlands.
In addition to the fecund soil, Lenexa also had the benefit of having easy access to the railroads. This access helped the farmers in shipping their crops far and wide at reasonable prices. As such Lenexa’s spinach farming industry thrived.
Lenexa’s love affair with spinach reached its peak in the 1930’s when the city was designated the spinach capital of the world. The title of “Spinach Capital” has since been transferred to Alma, Arkansas.
Annual Spinach Festival
Lenexa’s annual “Spinach Festival” is held each September, usually on a Saturday, at the “Sar-Ko-Trails Par Park” from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm.
The “Spinach Festival” features live music, live entertainment, dancing, food vendors, arts and crafts vendors, free activities for the children, a “Sweet Pea” baby contest, spinach recipe contest and the world’s largest spinach salad.
“Olive Oyl” and “Popeye” are on hand to help make, toss and serve the spinach salad to the hungry throngs.
Parking for the “Spinach Festival” is available at the “Lenexa City Hall” and the mall located onto 95th Street and Jackman Road.
During the festival a free shuttle service is available to take visitors to and from the designated parking lots to the festival grounds. The shuttles tend to come by every 10 minutes.
World’s Largest Spinach Salad Recipe
So what exactly is in the world’s largest spinach salad besides spinach? The salad contains 600 mushrooms, 100 cloves of garlic, 12 jars of bacon bits and of course 150 pounds of spinach. The massive amount of iron rich greens is also doused with a salad dressing comprised of 75 cups of red wine.
Of course a salad of that size can only be contained in a swimming pool and tossed around with pitch forks. Now how is that for a big bite? Eat your heart out Guy Fieri!
