Selecting a custom closet company can be confusing, especially if you have never had work done in your home by an outside company. There are many closet companies to choose from, but they are likely not equal in quality, price and service. In today’s extremely competitive economy, it is important for both buyer (you) and seller (closet company) to be on the same page to develop a solution that works for both of you.
To ensure you select a custom closet company that will offer the best design for your unique needs, at a cost that fits your budget, information is shared during the initial consultation. Most closet companies offer a free in-home consultation, during which a designer will come to your home, measure the space, and talk with you about your storage and design wants and needs for your project.
Use your in-home consultation time wisely. Ask questions of your designer so that you can compare quotes from competing firms on an apples-to-apples basis. Custom closet companies and their designers who can not or will not answer these questions should raise a red flag.
Read through the following list of questions and determine which are appropriate for your situation. Print out the list and have it handy during your in-home consultation.
Ask These Questions of Your Custom Closet Design Company
How long has the company been in business?
How long has your designer been with the company?
How long has your designer been in the industry?
Are there any current sales or promotions?
Does the price include tearing out and disposing of existing closet components?
Is this the lowest possible price?
Is there a discount for paying with cash versus a credit card?
Is financing available?
What is the earliest available installation date?
Are the installers employees or subcontractors?
What is the company’s BBB rating?
Does the company have a showroom you can visit?
During the in-home consultation, you should also be prepared to answer questions related to the project. These questions are discussed in my article Selecting a Custom Closet Company: Questions You Should Be Prepared to Answer.
Asking these questions-and any others you may have-will put you on the right path to selecting a custom closet company that will provide the best solution at the right price.
