Most of us have heard about the story of David and Goliath in I Samual 17. Goliath was a huge Philistine man who had all of Israel frightened. Some people say Goliath could have been over nine feet tall. He was a mean man who lived to frighten and destroy people. David was not afraid of Goliath. Goliath was just another man to David because David had a secret power of his own. David relied on the power of God to conquer his giants. David grabbed his sling, placed a rock in it and flung it at the giant. The rock hit Goliath in the head and killed him. David was now the champion of Israel. However, David did not forget that it was God who conquered the giant.
Conquering your giants with faith in God
Mathew 17:20 says He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
David understood what faith meant when he went up against Goliath. Goliath was a huge man who could have torn David in half with his two meaty hands. Goliath was a mountain of a man and it was David’s faith in God that destroyed the mountain of a man. God wants us to realize that if we have faith in Him we can conquer all of our giants. You can conquer your anxiety problems. You can conquer your dependency problems. You can conquer your financial problems. If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can conquer every giant that lies before you.
Personal thought- I remember being a shoplifter for over five years. I would steal every day of my life. My life was spiraling downward and I had a major problem. I could not stop stealing. My counselor told me my problem was the same as a cocaine addict’s problem. Every time I stole, I felt a high. This high is what kept me going. I needed to stop because I was going to get into some major trouble. I already had a judge wanting to send me to prison for a year just to make an example out of me. I had that faith that God could do anything. It was small, but I had it. I asked God to help me because I could not help myself. I stopped stealing and have not had the desire to go back to my old life. This is the power of God. He can conquer anything. And No, I did not go to jail.
Conquering your giants with strength through God
I Samuel 17:32-37 says “David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”
Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”
But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you.”
David found his strength through God. David was a smart young man. He knew he did not stand a chance against Goliath by himself. David did not go up against Goliath alone. David took the strength of God with him in his battle against Goliath. What does this tell us? David had a relationship with God and David had a prayer life with God. He knew who God was and David knew God would protect him against the giant Goliath. God protected David through the rest of his life and helped him conquer many more giants.
Today, we all have giants to conquer. You may have a sex addiction or you may watch pornography on your computer. You may be an abuse survivor or be in an abusive relationship. In a bad economy, your finances may be your giant. There are many things that affect our lives and become like horrible nine feet giants. We can feel helpless against these giants on our own. This is why we need to find our strength through our relationship with God. You can do your part by reading your Bible and praying to God daily. You can do your part by putting your faith in God. God will do his part by conquering the giants in your life. Jesus already conquered all those giants on the cross, but many of us forget that today in our busy stress filled lives.
After the giants are conquered there is eternity with God
John 3:16-21 Says “For God so loved the world that he gave his
one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”
Most people have seen or heard of John 3:16. It is the perfect scripture to show how much God really loves all of us. God sent His Son into the world to die for the world and save the world. Jesus died on the cross and conquered all of our sins. He took the punishment for all or our sins. Jesus also rose from the grave and is seated at the right hand of God. When we accepted Jesus as our savior, our sins were forgiven and we are now children of God. As children of God, we have the hope of eternal life in Heaven.
David was not a perfect man, he made his mistakes. However, he trusted his life to God. God conquered all of David’s giants because David had faith in God. David found his strength in God in everything he accomplished. David was a great man of God who will spend eternity in heaven with God.
As Christians, we are also children of God. None of us are perfect. We make mistakes every day of our lives. However, when we put our faith in God, he will conquer all of our giants. There is nothing too hard for God. When we trust in God, we will find our strength through Him. David conquered Goliath with all of the power of God behind him. Today, you need to accept the power of God to conquer all the giants that wreak havoc in your lives. All you have to do is have a little faith, drop down on your knees and pray to Him. You can do anything through God who strengthens you.
