Are you going to an event where parking in some locations is free parking? An example location is a church parking lot. Free parking is likely to be predominant in small to mid-size towns with populations of fifty thousand or less. Having an event in a small town gives locals the opportunity to raise money for charities or their organization by charging parking fees in otherwise free parking locations.
A church may allow a charity organization or members of their church seeking funds for church related workings, funds for a soup kitchen the church backs, the church could be seeking funds to repair or replace parts of the church, seating, flooring, windows and the pulpit for instance.
Parking attendants will work the entrance and exits of the lot before and during the event. Because the lots aren’t set up with the typical layout of lots that charge daily parking fees there is a mystique when characters show up taking fees from the back of their trunk.
At the entrance and exits the placement of cars or trucks may be found with a sign set up beside the vehicle with price of parking fee and who the fee goes to benefit if it’s for a charity. Several people may be working out of one vehicle so that no one gets past.
People working out of the trunk of their car or back of their truck is somewhat shady parking. People selling product bootleg out of their trunk is often attached to what goes on in society. People taking parking fees from the back of their vehicle can very easily have pulled their vehicle into position and be taking fees without permission from anyone. They may not be taking fees for a charity or organization. It can be a con — a way for them to make money.
Shady parking can occur anywhere. You should always be leery of anyone taking money from the trunk of their car.
If you are unsure before you give them a fee ask to see proof of who they say they are. Have them to show you proof of the charity or organization if that’s who they are taking money for. You may call the business whose lot they are in or the chamber of commerce. Many times the local chamber of commerce will know what is going on but the business should know what is going on.
