I just had to smile when I read an article titled, She’s Got Rhythm. It was written by Leslie Quander Wooldridge and can be found in the November/December 2010 issue of the AARP Magazine.
At the age of 56 Alla Marinow started taking drum lessons. And just 2 years later she has a band called The Lab Rats. She is the drummer for the group.
Soon after starting these drum lessons she began to experience health problems. According the article, “Weeks after her first lesson, she began feeling tired. Doctors implanted a pacemaker. Then came two more surgeries, for a thyroid disorder and for breast cancer”.
While others may have slowed down, Alla kept perfecting her newly-found musical craft. Eventually she started going to jam sessions. As a result her band was formed.
Just recently she played to an intimate crowd of 80 people at her first paid gig in Walnut Creek, California.
I just love her spirit for life and having fun. Thankfully she is much healthier now having recovered from her illnesses.
I like her attitude when she says, “Why should the kids have all the fun?” I couldn’t agree with her more. I hope she soars to new heights with her band and in her life.
Rock on Alla, Rock on!!!
