I hadn’t considered looking at the boxes of macaroni and cheese while my daughter was living in the dorms at college. Instead, I had bought her the individual cups of Velveeta Shells and Cheddar and Kraft Mac & Cheese Cups to cook in her microwave at college. Those would work if you want to make an individual serving of Shells and Cheddar Tuna Casserole.
NOTE: Using the individual Kraft Mac & Cheese cups would be more or cost the same as using the store brand boxed version.
It wasn’t until she moved home to start at another college, my daughter cooked the pasta for the boxed shells and cheddar in the microwave. There was a brand of shells and cheddar I had bought that had the cooking instructions for microwaves.
I was a little leery when I first saw her making boxed shells and cheddar in the microwave. After trying it, I couldn’t tell the difference from it being cooked on a stovetop. This is why I chose to use it in the tuna casserole recipe for college students.
By using the tuna casserole recipe below, a college student could make more of the tuna casserole. One thing roommates in a dorm could do is split the cost if they both like tuna casserole. This would make it cheaper for both college roommates.
Ingredients for Shells and Choose Tuna Casserole
Ingredients used are store brand items.
NOTE: Shur Fine Macaroni and Cheese Shells and Cheddar brand is the store brand for Affiliated Foods stores. Affiliate Food grocery stores are independently owned. Some stores may have IGA in their names.
1 box of Shur Fine Macaroni & Cheese Shells and Cheddar
1 can of store brand Tuna in Water
1 8 ounce store brand can of peas
Salt and Pepper
Cooking the Shells
These instructions are for cooking the shells in the microwave in case your box doesn’t have this information.
NOTE: If using Velveeta Shells and Cheese in a box, the shells may take a few minutes longer than the Shur Fine shells due to size difference.
1. Microwave 4 cups of water in a covered 2-quart microwavable dish on high for ten minutes or to boiling.
2. Add shells and microwave for 10 minutes uncovered until tender. Drain the shells.
Finishing the Tuna Casserole
Drain the cans of tuna and peas. Dump tuna and peas into the bowl with cooked shells. Mix in the 1/4 milk and 1/4 cup butter. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
