If you go through quite a bit of ribbon in a year’s time, whether because you’re doing lots of crafts or you give many gifts, you might be interested in making a ribbon dispenser box that keeps all that ribbon tangle-free. The box can sit nearly anywhere and helps you organize several spools of ribbon at once. If you have more ribbon than that just make a second box – and a third! All you need for each dispenser is a shoebox and a couple craft supplies.
The best shoebox for this project is one that has a lid that can be completely removed. You can use a shoebox with a hinged lid, but if you do, you’ll need to attach some Velcro dots to the front and sides so that, when you close the lid on the box, you can fasten it so that it stays shut. If you’re making a dispenser for small spools of ribbon, like that you would use in sewing a girl’s dress, you can use a child’s shoebox as the dispenser. For other, larger rolls, use a regular size shoebox.
Cover the box as well as the lid in decorative paper, fabric or even contact paper. Now cut strips of cardboard to go across the inside of the box to make sections. If the ribbon spools will fit, attach the cardboard strips so that they go across the width of the box, and you can store several rolls of ribbon. If they won’t fit this way, turn them the other way, and attach the cardboard pieces so that they run across the length of the box. You’ll still be able to store two or three rolls this way. Cut the cardboard longer than it need be, bend the ends, then glue the bent areas to the inside of the box.
In the side of the box create a couple of holes. Leave the lid off the box so you can see where the individual sections are. Make one hole for each section, positioning the hole so that it is in the middle area of the section. After creating the holes install grommets to give them a finished look. The grommet kits can be found at discount department stores, fabric stores, home improvement retailers and even craft stores. Follow the instructions on the package; it’s not hard at all to add grommets.
Pull the end of the ribbon out a couple of inches through the holes. Set the box anywhere and, whenever you need it, you can simply pull a length of the ribbon out of the hole. It’s a cheap way to create a ribbon organizer that dispenses as well!
