According to www.espn.com Reggie Bush forfeited his Heisman Trophy before it could be stripped from him. Should Reggie Bush have forfeited his Heisman Trophy? The simple answer is yes. Reggie Bush accepted money while still playing football for USC. Because of this, Bush had to be ineligible to win any awards. The sad thing is that Reggie Bush deserved the Heisman. With or without the money, Reggie Bush was the best player in the nation and so deserved to win. And just the same, Reggie Bush was found to have broken the rules and so should forfeit the Heisman Trophy. With his forfeit, Bush became the first winner in the history of the Heisman Trophy to have to forfeit the award. It is a sad day in the career of Reggie Bush and the legacy of the Heisman Trophy.
The question in this situation is the same question we must ask about Pete Rose. Did the fact that Pete Rose bet on baseball change the fact that statistically he was the best hitter in the history of baseball? And so should Pete Rose be denied his place in the Hall of Fame? It is not an easy question to answer. Does the fact that Reggie Bush accepted money while still playing at USC change the fact that he was the best player in college football at the time? The answer is no. However, the legacy of the Heisman Trophy cannot allow Reggie Bush to keep his trophy when he broke the rules. What kind of example would that set for the next generation? Everyone knows that Reggie Bush was one of the greatest college football players ever. With or without a Heisman Trophy, this fact is without question. Unfortunately for Reggie Bush every time anybody talks about his career the fact that he was forced to forfeit the Heisman Trophy will be the first thing on their mind. There is a first for everything, and now we have this. All I can say is that it is a sad day in Heisman history, but Bush’s forfeit was the best thing for all parties involved.
No one should really feel too sorry for Reggie Bush though. He is a multi millionaire. And Bush will continue to make millions in the NFL for years to come. Sure the Reggie Bush name is tainted, but that will not change the bottom line on his bank account. College football fans and all former and future Heisman Trophy winners are the real losers here.
