If you enjoy dressing your dog up for Halloween there are some easy accessories you can make that will go well with nearly any outfit. If your dog doesn’t like getting that dressed up, but will wear an accessory or two, you can accommodate him, too. With a few common craft supplies anyone can make Halloween accessories that are cheap yet really cute.
Put the colors orange and black together and you instantly have a Halloween theme. Use pom-poms to make necklaces, scarves, paw bracelets and more. You’ll find the pom-poms available in an assortment of sizes and colors. Choose the pom-poms that are right for the size of dog you have. Decide on the pattern you want. You can alternate orange and black, just make an orange one, an all-black one, or make it mostly one color with the other color thrown in, here and there. Glue small pom-poms together, all in a row, and wrap them around the dog’s ankle. A dot of Velcro will secure it. Make a matching necklace by using the same size or a slightly larger size of pom-poms. To make a scarf, glue the pom-poms together to make a really long strand. Wrap it around the front of the dog’s neck, crisscross it behind his neck, then bring the ends back to the front.
Cut a piece of Halloween fabric and your dog virtually has a costume. Cut a rectangle that will go across your dog’s back. The rectangle should be long enough to go from one side of the dog, over his back, and on to the opposite side. Hem the fabric all the way around the perimeter. If you don’t sew just use fabric glue. Add a piece of Velcro which will go from one side to the other, under the dog’s belly. This will keep the fabric from sliding off the dog. The dog can wear the simple outfit as it is or you can attach pockets to help him carry your cell phone, keys, water bottle or other items.
If you can shape a piece of paper or foam into a cone shape you’ve got any number of Halloween hats. Twist the paper into a cone, trim around the edge to make it even, then tape or glue to secure. Leave a small opening at the point of the cone and you can insert various embellishments. For example, twist a pipe cleaner around a pencil to turn it into a spring. Glue on a fake eyeball, a pom-pom, or something else. Use two pipe cleaners to make antennae that hold eyes or other things. You can even use fake hair to make a ponytail that comes out of the cone point. There are many different hats you can make using any number of craft supplies.
A child’s headband makes it easy to create a Halloween necklace. The choker-type necklace is best suited for a larger dog unless you use a headband meant for a doll. It’s easy to glue on a Halloween novelty, right in the center of the headband, then wrap it around the dog’s neck. If you think it might not stay simply glue some ribbon pieces to the ends and tie.
Each year, it gets harder and harder to dress up your house, yourself and your kids. You have to do it, though, so save by dressing up your dog for little money. He or she will still look adorable and you won’t have to break the bank!
