“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
The most well known passage from the Bible is the one verse that explains the why. As in, why would God allow me to go to His Heaven. The answer is found in this verse. God loves us! Isn’t it amazing with all the problems in this world, all the violence, all the lies and all the disobedience that God loves us! How can a great and perfect God love sinful disobedient mankind? Simply because we are His creation. He not only created, but He also sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sin and disobedience.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23
How can this possibly bring comfort or inspiration? If this verse was left alone, it wouldn’t, but since it isn’t left alone it shows the depth of God’s love toward us. Every person on the face of the earth is a sinner (someone who disobeys God’s laws). When you break a law there is a punishment for that law. No matter how “good” we try to live, we cannot measure up to the glory of God. As a result, we cannot on our own merits (good works) enter into Heaven. See, if you have ever lied (even once) you have broken God’s law. It doesn’t matter how many times you break God’s law, it makes us a sinner (someone who disobeys God’s laws), and makes us unworthy to enter into the presence of a Holy God.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
This verse is what makes the last verse so special. God showed His love for us by sending His Son Jesus Christ to die for us. Jesus paid a price that I could not pay. Even though my sins make me unworthy of God’s love, He loved me anyway! Isn’t that awesome! Because of His love for me (and you), He wanted me to be able to be with Him one day. God knew that the only way was for someone else to die in my place. Jesus willingly laid down His life for my sin (disobedience).
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23
You see, what each and everyone us deserve is death. Our sin (disobedience) is punishable by death. Not just a physical death, but an everlasting death. Revelation chapter 20 verses 11-15 tells us that any who have not accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior (the Sacrifice for our sin) will be cast into a lake of fire. The great news is this doesn’t have to happen to us! God has offered us a gift of eternal life. All we must do is simply receive it. It cannot be a gift if we have to work in anyway for it. Truly, this is the greatest gift that has ever been given or will ever be received.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:9-10,13
Being saved from the punishment of our sin is as easy as 1,2,3, and as simple as A,B,C. First, Admit that you are a sinner (someone who has broken God’s law); Second, Believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your disobedience (sins); Third, Confess that He can and has saved you from the penalty of your sins. No matter how many people say that you must do something in order to go to Heaven (such as live a good life), God made it simple for us. Let God be true and every man a liar. He loves you and wants you to be with Him someday. All you have to do is ask. Why not do that right now?
