The stars of the new TLC show Sister Wives are being investigated by the state of Utah for felony bigamy. Kody Brown, his four wives, and his 16 kid, said that they were prepared for any risks from being on this show. The state said that they decided to investigate the family because of the show. The Utah County Attorney’s office has yet to decide if they are going to prosecute the family, according to E!.
The Brown family is not the only reality T.V. stars who are having or have had legal issues. Snooki, from The Jersey Shore;Kendra, from The Girls Next Door and her own show Kendra; and Chris Jenkins, from Megan Wants to Marry a Millionaire and I Love Money, have all had serious legal issues.
The most recent reality star to have a run-in with the law was Snooki from The Jersey Shore. While filming the third season of the hit reality show, Snooki was arrested in Seaside Heights, NJ, for disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and drunk in public, according to Yahoo. Snooki wound up pleading guilty to one count of disturbing the peace, and was ordered to pay $500 and perform community service. Snooki’s run-in with the law just gave her more publicity, and hasn’t hurt her image at all.
Kendra Wilkinson, who shot to fame as one of Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends on The Girl’s Next Door and then went on to star in her own reality show, Kendra, was in a legal battle over a sex tape which she made before she was famous with an old boyfriend, according to NY Daily News. Her ex-boyfriend, and costar in the tape, Justin Frye, released it to Vivid Entertainment. Despite a legal battle, the tape, Kendra Exposed, was eventually released to the public with record sales. Kendra worked hard to change her image from a Playboy Bunny to a housewife and mom, and this sex tape ruined that image. The effects on the next season of her show remain to be seen.
Ryan Jenkins had a short run as a reality star on the VH1 show Megan Wants to Marry a Millionaire. While the show was still airing, his wife, Jasmine Fiore, was found dead in a suitcase that was dropped in a dumpster. The police soon began investigating Jenkins, who went on the run to Canada. He was eventually found dead of an apparent suicide in a motel room in British Columbia, near Vancouver, according to People. The two VH1 shows that he was on were quickly canceled.
All of these reality stars were in different degrees of trouble with the law, and so there were different degrees of repercussions for them and their fame. It remains to be seen how this felony bigamy charge will affect the Browns. The show, however, is still airing.
