What’s even scarier than C-list stars on a dance floor? How about wobbly, C-list stars on an ice skating rink? ABC has announced its latest star-powered reality show- and this one sounds like it’s gonna be good!
Skating With the Stars will premiere next month on ABC, after the ultra popular Dancing With the Stars ends it’s season 11 run. On Skating With the Stars, celebrities will be paired with world class ice skaters as they compete in figure and ice dancing routines ala DWTS style.
Just like Dancing With the Stars there will be a panel of judges to critique the wannabe skaters and the at-home audience will vote for their favorites. But dancing on ice in front of a live audience is a lot different than dancing on a ballroom floor- even a round one. I hope ABC will keep the medics handy!
So what celebrities will appear on Skating With The Stars? The official announcement comes on November 2nd. Until then we can guess and speculate on Skating With the Stars celebrity lineup as well as the professional skaters and even the show’s host (I say keep Bergeron on after DWTS ends).
But if it’s anything like the DWTS lineup, expect to see some reality TV stars on this one. With The Situation getting the boot on Dancing, maybe Snooki will put on her furry slippers and take a spin on the ice. Or perhaps we’ll see a Bachelor or Bachelorette alum (hey- they gave Brad Womack second chance at love- maybe Jake Pavelka will get a second chance at a trophy).
Of course, ABC could try and woo some of the celebs who turned down ‘Dancing With the Stars’. That list would include Kirstie Alley, Sylvester Stallone , Suzanne Sommers and even Ann Coulter. But something tells me if these stars turned down DWTS, they would even more quickly turn down Skating With the Stars.
Then again, maybe actress Melanie Griffith will finally get her chance to compete in an ABC celebrity vote-off show. According to an article on PopEater, the actress has long wanted to be part of the DWTS cast but the producers have repeatedly turned her down.
Back in 2006, FOX aired a similar show called Skating With Celebrities. To get an idea of the types of celebs that signed up for FOX’s version of the show, the celebrity cast included Bruce Jenner, Full House star Dave Coulier, Todd Bridges and Kristy Swanson (who took home the trophy- and a new husband, skater Lloyd Eisler).
Olympic figure skater Dorothy Hamill was one of the judges on the FOX show and pro ice skating partners included Tai Babilonia and Nancy Kerrigan. FOX’s Skating With Celebrities lasted one season.
As for ABC’s Skating With the Stars, will we see the return of Nancy Kerrigan? Or is this more Tonya Harding’s cup of tea?
Skating With the Stars will premiere on November 22, 2010 on ABC.
