Hollywood has a long history of creating sequel after sequel to movies that were often better left alone. Why? Because they know that even if the sequel sucks they will still make millions at the box office as the original movie’s fans flock to see its sequel. This is my top three list of blockbuster hit follow-ups that should be avoided at all costs.
‘Smokey And The Bandit’
OK, the first movie was simply COOL. It’s an American Classic with a great plot and humor. The movie is fast paced, fun, and funny, there is no tedious repetition or worn out old jokes. In fact absolutely NOTHING about the first movie gives you the urge to either bang your head against the wall or change the channel to “Teletubbies” so you won’t be quite as bored. The sequels on the other hand quite often evoke both. I mean COME ON. After loosing 80G in a bet are you really going to make a similar bet again using the same person? Or were the elephant’s really necessary. Why do they have to use all of the same jokes as in the first movie? Since when did Bandit become an alcoholic? The list goes on and on. “Smokey and the Bandit 3” stars Jerry Reed (Cledus) as the main character ( No Bandit in this one) so how did it even get the name??? With one you have a decent film about an American legend. With three you have an overextended monstrosity with little to no plot that often leaves’s viewer’s wishing they were elsewhere.
What could be better. A ridiculous parody of numerous popular horror films that makes you laugh AND quiver in your seat with fear. Or well mock fear. The slogan was ‘No Mercy, No Shame’ No Sequel’. But wait! What happened to that. Not one but three (Yes THREE) sequels followed this supposedly lone movie. So…. Pardon me but WTF! Yes i enjoyed the first one. I laughed until i cried it was funny it was something new. The second was more of the same, the third i could hardly stay awake and i didn’t even bother to watch the 4’Th. How much can I take? Obviously not as much as they can dish out.
‘Child’s Play’ Trilogy
“Child’s Play” was a great movie right. Andy gets his dream toy for his birthday and the poor hapless kid ends up in the middle of a fight for his life as it comes to life and tries to steal his body to free its soul. Perhaps a play on every parents worst nightmare that their children’s soul’s are in fact being ‘stolen’ by their toys. Perhaps not. But after watching the doll be incinerated at the end of the movie i was SO not prepared for the sequel or the one after that. And then to follow all of that up with the “Bride of Chucky” Oh joy another seemingly endless plot bent on separating movie goers from their money. The ex shows up and drags Chucky off to wed her but first they have to dig up his body. Each movie ends in the irreversible destruction of the doll Chucky and each new movie begins where it somehow survived this cataclysmic ending. Watch if you dare. Personally i think a nap would be a better use of your time.
