If you’re looking for northern small town charm, Newaygo, Michigan is the place to see. Whether you’re looking for antiques, or maybe something a little more up-to-date, or even just a nice place to relax and maybe catch a fish or two on the beautiful Muskegon River, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for in the “River Valley”. Newaygo’s shopping district offers great food, charming shops, outdoor exploration, and even some adventure if you’re up for it, and lodging.
To start the day, you may want to check out Elizabeth Haley Boutique, a stylish little small-town shop with vintage clothing and jewelry. Or take a look at the different antique stores around, including the Newaygo Antique Mall that has room after room of interesting finds. Just across Main Street is Log Carpenter Furniture, a truly unique store selling rustic and northern home decor. If you’re into activities in the great outdoors, be sure to check out Powers Outfitters, which has everything you need for outdoor sporting and activities.
For a break, stop at River Stop Cafe, a delightful coffee shop with a lot of personality and great food, too. Or, if you’re in the mood for a hearty meal, visit Sportsman’s Bar which has a rustic atmosphere, good food, and friendly service. Continue strolling down Main Street and you’ll find a variety of parks, including Riverside Park, where you can enjoy a winding walking path that follows the Muskegon River, a great place to fish, or even just relax and enjoy the scenery. And while we’re on the topic of parks, just across the street from the south end of Riverside Park is Marshall Memorial Park, which features a natural walking path that goes back into the woods and has beautiful picnic spots.
Newaygo has it’s fair share of outdoor adventure. You could go for a canoe or kayak trip down the river and take in some of the spectacular views along the river by visiting Wisner Rents canoes. They provide everything you need, including transportation to or from the beginning or destination of your trip. Henning County Park is a great campground that has all the amenities you need, just a few steps away from town. It’s right along the Muskegon River with a boat launch and fish cleaning station.
Newaygo has things going on all year ’round, including their three-day craft shows on Memorial and Labor Day weekends which are definitely something to see. The Christmas Festival in early December is also a great event for the whole family. For the Christmas Walk, the entire downtown area is illuminated with Christmas lights and holiday music plays throughout. The local stores have open houses and sales, and some offer hot chocolate, cider and cookies. There are horse-drawn sleigh rides through the shopping district, and there are roasted chestnuts, carolers, even live reindeer. Truly a wonderful experience for all.
In short, Newaygo is a charming little town with lots to offer and lots to see. It’s bound to make your weekend a pleasant and memorable one!
