You know that commercial, I believe it’s a Best Buy one, where the salesperson is talking up this new and fancy TV, telling the fake commerical family: “Now you can tell everyone that you tweeted from your couch!”. Then the family proceeds to be so impressed at this revelation and desires to buy the TV there, on the spot, for that reason?
I hate that commercial. Let me tell you why – you can tweet from your couch anyway. It’s called a laptop computer, or a cell phone. lol. Not that impressive. It’s poor marketing on Best Buy’s behalf.
Well apparently, these so called “smart tv’s” that Best Buy is advertising so horribly, are getting ready to hit us all in a big way. Smart TV’s are a computer within your television set. You are able to access Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Picasa, etc. on your TV without picking up your computer or cellular telephone. Evidently, Google and Apple are battling over the best method to introduce this new technology – tinyurl.com/34m9kmu. Apple has separate equipment to make your TV smart in the Apple TV (see our review here – codeformat.com/index.cfm), and Google plans to have theirs integrated into the TV itself, without a need for another box. Which is better?
Nerds love new technology, regardless of whether that technology is needed or not. So regardless of whether or not we can access all of those things via other outlets, the newest and greatest thing will need to be had. In this home, however, I feel as though we have had some pretty “smart” tv’s as it is, due to never just having a tv in the house for just straight viewing, but rather – having a Media Center hooked up to store all of our pictures, videos, music, movies, etc. Or having the Apple TV with all the applications to go with, or having the 32 inch flat screen television as a computer monitor in the home office (because you really DO need 3 tv’s in the house for 2 people right?).
But even if you can access all that information from a different portal, new technology always gets you in on one little detail that you can’t have in your current avenues and all of a sudden can’t live without. Like AppleTV. The new one let’s you have Netflix integrated in it. Super. We don’t have it in the older model. So now we have AppleTV and a PS3 hooked up to our TV so that we can have Netflix as well (along with Blurays and video games of course). If we didn’t use Bluray, we could just utilize the one box instead of two. But then they also have Bluray players that have the applications AND Netflix. And I bet the new Playstation, whenever it comes out, will have all of those and more. So they will get you in on that one little thing. I’m sure that these Smart TV’s will come with something that will make your life just a little bit easier, and you won’t be able to live without it after hearing that news. It always happens.
