If ‘Choosy Moms Choose Jif’, I have a problem. My kids love peanut butter. But I don’t like the hydrogenated fat in most commercial peanut butter brands And we don’t like ‘health food’ natural peanut butter because it is oily. Smucker’s Natural Jif is a happy medium.
Smucker’s is now the parent company for Jif Peanut Butter, of which I have long been a fan. Over the years, Jif Peanut Butter has passed the test of purity and freshness. Skippy and Peter Pan peanut butter just don’t have that signature Jif Peanut Butter taste. Unfortunately all processed peanut butter, including Jif Peanut Butter come with serious health and nutrition risk. Processed peanut butter like Jif have always been made with hydrogenated fat and partially hydrogenated fat.
In health and nutrition circles, hydrogenated fat is also called ‘plastic fat’ and ‘fake fat’. Hydrogenated fats came into use to replace lard and animal fat, which are high in cholesterol. Hydrogenated fat is a chemical compound that has been used for decades to keep products fresh and give them a long shelf life. But hydrogenated fat is extremely unhealthy. Hydrogenated fats are essentially the same as trans fats. Hydrogenated fats contain dangerous LDL (low density level) cholesterol.
For a time, Jif Peanut Butter made a Reduced Fat Jif, but that product still contained hydrogenated fat. Happily, however, the J.M.Smucker’s people now make Natural Jif Peanut Butter. Natural Jif Peanut Butter contains palm oil, but no hydrogenated fat. Natural Jif Peanut Butter is made 90% peanuts, sugar, salt, palm oil and molasses. Natural Jif Peanut Butter, creamy or crunchy, does contain 3% RDA of saturated fats, but has no trans fat or cholesterol.
Natural Jif Peanut Butter tastes just like the original flavor Jif. And unlike other natural peanut butter spreads, Natural Jif Peanut Butter doesn’t have that layer of oil on the top of the jar that has to be mixed in with the peanut paste. Natural Jif Peanut Butter is just as smooth and creamy as original Jif Peanut Butter. Stores like Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club and Meijer are making less expensive off-brands of Natural Jif Peanut Butter that is less expensive, too.
