Some beautiful Barbie doll outfits can only be found in stores. Even if you like to make some doll clothes yourself there are limits unless you’re a professional seamstress. All those tiny seams and little hems can be very challenging for even the best seamstress. There is a way that you can make casual dresses and other outfits for a Barbie doll without a big struggle. Use socks! When you use socks to make new doll outfits you find that you can create many different designs with ease!
Use a set of baby socks to make a skirt and shirt set for Barbie. Cut the socks straight across, just above the heel, and use the ankle area of the socks to create the outfit. If you own more than one pair of baby socks you can mix and match. Make a blue skirt with a white shirt or combine two other colors. Or, use matching socks then implement techniques to embellish just the shirt.
To make the sock skirt simply sew a piece of elastic around the top area of the sock. Or, cut a small slit down one side of the sock and add a piece of Velcro to secure. Sew a piece of narrow lace or ribbon around the hem. If you have no machine you can use fabric glue to add the trim. To make the sock shirt, cut the lower edge as short as you want. Make a halter, midriff or a waist-length shirt. Hem the bottom or add lace or ribbon. The top edge needs no hemming so you can go ahead and embellish as you want.
Make a dress for a Barbie doll by using a sock like those worn under slacks. Cut off the heel area and use the remaining sock. With this long piece you can make a floor-length, knee-length or mini dress. Hem the bottom or add lace, ribbon or ruffles to the top and/or bottom.
Create a huge assortment of designs by using assorted techniques for making each piece look different. Cut a hemline in a slanted method. Or, cut the top at a slanted angle. Attach tiny ribbon straps or straps of gathered lace. Stitch a short piece of narrow elastic down the front, between the breasts, and you’ll create a gathered look that changes the entire appearance.
There are many other things you can do to make each outfit look unique. Draw or write on the outfit with fabric paints or paint markers, glue on tiny sequin, tie a belt around the waist, or even sew on tiny buttons. Get creative. Soon your Barbie dolls will have a ton of new clothes! A girl can never have too many clothes, right?
