More and more children are being diagnosed with learning disabilities. Students are not unintelligent just because they learn differently; however, numerous students are convinced that their individualized education programs (IEP) give them an excuse not to work as hard as the other students.
No wonder so many teachers are having problems in their classrooms. Just because children are on an IEP does not mean they should not meet the standard for each class.
Too many students choose to take advantage of their disabilities, choosing instead to put on a show in the classrooms. And when the teachers challenge them to produce substantial work, the parents attack the teachers, reminding the teachers that their children cannot do the work.
“The passage of the updated version of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004) made parents of kids with special needs even more crucial members of their child’s education team. Parents can now work with educators to develop a plan – the individualized education plan (IEP) – to help kids succeed in school.”
Parents are supposed to be collaborating with educators to help their children, but this is often not the case.
The negative attitude of these parents is like poison in the lives of their children. Instead of helping the students to excel, these adults use the law to provide their children with excuses to get by.
This is one of the reasons the achievement scores in the U.S. are not progressing. No one should be stunned by this fact.
Research reveals that “U.S. mathematics and science education between kindergarten and 12th grade ranks now 48th worldwide.” This data is embarrassing and will continue to get worse.
Just imagine, technology has improved the world immensely, so why is it that so many children in America are not succeeding in school?
While teachers in America are struggling to keep the students orderly enough to begin class, China is continuing to eclipse the U.S. by being “the world’s top high-technology exporter.”
Employers want suitable employees. Therefore, if American children are not learning, they will not be able to graduate from college and keep up with the rest of the world.
Parents, who really want the best for their children, need to understand that employers will not ask for their children’s IEP.
The world is aware that people have weaknesses, but society is also fully aware that successful individuals strive daily to overcome their shortcomings.
