South Oxford Six is a classical music collective that was formed in 2003 when composers Daniel Sonenberg, Edward Ficklin and Serbian Alexandra Vrebalov met as participants at the American Opera Projects “Composers and the Voice” held at South Oxford Space in Fort Greene. Now joined by composers Kala Pierson and Michael Rose they collaborate as a collective of five diverse members who share a common appreciation of creating new music.
Their diversity offers an interesting collaborative dynamic and to date they have presented concerts at Symphony Space’s Thalia Theater, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Broadway Presbyterian church and a tour of Serbia which included Sombor, Zrenjanin and Novi Sad in 2007. They are currently collaborating with the Momenta String Quartet to facilatate a new week long workshop “Summer in Sombor.”
American Opera Projects, a Fort Greene based organization which mentors new talent and offers free programs to introduce young adults and diverse communities to opera will be featuring their latest collaboration with soprano Eleanor Taylor and pianist Jocelyn Dueck, known as Two Sides Sounding, in a concert of new voice and piano works about crossing cultural divides.
If you would like to find out more about the project, program and workshops offered by AOP you can check out their website at www.operaprojects.org.
