The Spaans Cookie Company has been around along time. While Spaans may have been around for a long time it has only recently begun to spread and become a company that is state wide. Spaans Cookie Company started out in Galt and for decades Galt was the only place you could get Spaans cookies. However the company expanded both in what they offered as well as stores that offered Spaans products. A few years ago Northern California grocery stores got Spaans and more recently even Southern California has got Spaans cookies in the grocery stores. However if you like Spaans it is still very hard to find stores that sale Spaans cookies so if you really want to get Spaans cookies and other treats you may have to go to Galt to get them.
Spaans Cookie Company is located at 456 C Street, Galt, California. It is located in the heart of the old downtown Galt. There you will find the Spaan store as well as the bakery. Obviously if you want the freshest cookies the place to go is Galt.
The Spaans store often has samples so you can decide what cookie you want. Spaans has many more products besides cookies and some variation depending on the seasons. Spaans offers many more flavors then you are likely to ever find at a grocery store that offers Spaans. There are about 50 kinds of cookies when I counted. Locally they also offer other foods that you will not get at a local grocery store at least not yet.
Spaans has loaf cakes, breads, rolls, cakes, pies, muffins, and other baked goods. These can only be bought at the store. The Spaans store also has other items besides there own food. they have a large selection of coffee. They have souvenirs and small trinkets like you would expect at a tourist stop. Many people taking the 99 stop at Spaans which is why the store has some tourist stop type items.
Prices vary depending how much you are getting and what. Most prices are pretty good. Cookies cost between $3.50-7. Oddly after having gone to Spaans I was in a Bakersfield grocery store the same day and found the same cookie about .25 cheaper but they were not fresher. The other foods are typically good prices though the pies which are very good are expensive at $12.
All the food is very good. The rolls and cookies are family favorites. Even diabetics might be able to enjoy Spaans as they have many sugar free cookies.
While they do have the bakery on site they do not offer tours. You can see them work in the bakery through a window but they are not always baking and it is not very exciting to watch.
While I would not go out of my way to go to Galt for Spaans if you are on the 99 anyway and go by Galt then it is worth the extra 10 minutes to stop in.
