Candles are a nice touch for any holiday, or even ordinary days, but when it comes to Halloween, plain candles just aren’t enough. You need spooky candles, eerie candles. Ghoulish candles are really easy to make when you start with a Styrofoam cone. You can make any number of monsters depending upon the craft supplies you choose. These monsters can be the bases for the Halloween candles at your table.
Styrofoam cones cone in a huge variety of sizes. Choose two identical cones, but keep in mind that part of the cone will be cut off, so consider that when choosing the size you want for the Halloween candle holders. Cut about a third of the cone off the top to make a flat surface that will hold the chosen candle. This surface can be somewhat small, removing less of the cone, if you’ll be using tea lights instead of votives. Use a serrated knife and cut an old candle a couple of times with it. The transference of the wax to the knife allows it to make a clean, smooth cut through the Styrofoam.
Decide on the monster you want to make then use the necessary craft supplies to make it happen. For a mummy candle holder, glue wiggly eyes or black beads onto the cone. Wrap the rest of the cone with gauze, white sheet strips or something similar. To make a ghost, cut a circle of white fabric, then drape it over the cone. Attach wiggly eyes and a felt mouth.
Wrap the cone in a piece of green or black feather boa to make a witch. Use boas in different colors to make even more Halloween monsters. Or, forget using a lot of craft supplies and just paint the cone. Use tempera paints which don’t melt Styrofoam as some paints will. Glue on wiggly eyes, tie on a bandana, use pipe cleaners and wiggly eyes to make weird characters, or otherwise decorate the cones. Use this technique to make a bat candle holder for Halloween. Paint the cone black, glue on wiggly eyes, then cut wing shapes from flat foam. Glue them on the sides to finish.
When you’re finished creating the monster candle holder simply select a small candle, in a container, and set it on top of the decorated cone. Make these for the table, mantle, bathroom, bedroom or any room in the house!
