St Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford will start his second NFL game ever in Oakland September 19th as the St Louis Rams play the Oakland Raiders in this interesting NFL Week Two game. Bradford’s debut against NFC West division rival the Arizona Cardinals was a success if not in the stats column. Bradford looked like an NFL quarterback in his first NFL game and more importantly he looked like a leader on the field. If Bradford can stay healthy he could have a great career.
The Oakland Raiders looked like, well the Oakland Raiders. The overt optimism by many over the perceived resurgence of the Silver and Black was smashed by a tenacious and unforgiving Tennessee Titans defense. The Oakland defense looked strong in the early going and they were doing a great job of keeping Chris Johnson contained. Johnson was averaging two yards a carry until he busted off a 79 yard run in the second quarter.
Passing attack for Oakland Raiders & St Louis Rams in Need of Improvement
Jason Campbell looked lost at times in his debut as the new Oakland Raiders signal caller. There were not many positive things to take away from the Oakland Raiders game against the Titans. Campbell did have several of his on target passes dropped, a couple of them for potential touchdowns. Campbell will now be in the friendly confines of his home McAffee Stadium in Oakland and it could have a positive effect on him.
Campbell loves his tight ends and during the game it appeared he was looking for Oakland Raiders tight end Zach Miller an inordinate amount of the time. Perhaps it was because Miller was the only receiver not putting the ball on the ground. Campbell was the leading passer in the game passing for 180 yards but his leading receiver, Darren McFadden had 55 yards receiving. McFadden also led the team in rushing with 95 yards in an impressive game.
The St Louis Rams passing attack may not have looked pretty in Sam Bradford’s debut but he did move the ball up and down the field which was not expected. The St Louis Rams actually had a chance to win all the way up to the final gun until Bradford threw an ill advised pass. Bradford threw for 253 yards and threw one touchdown pass. On the bad side he threw three interceptions and his QB rating was 53.9. There is now edge in the passing attack of either team.
Running Games of Oakland Raiders & St Louis Rams Will Take Center Stage in This Game
It has been a long time since the Oakland Raiders running game was a key to them winning a game. Darren McFadden looked great at times in the game against the Tennessee Titans and then on a few plays he looked lost. McFadden just missed the century mark, rushing for 95 yards and also racking up 55 yards receiving out of the back field.
With Michael Bush out of the game with a thumb injury, McFadden was the featured back and he made the most of it. McFadden could have a big game against the St Louis Rams if the Raiders use the same game plan as the first week. McFadden is the type of back that gets better with more carries and the Oakland Raiders need to increase his carries to be effective.
St Louis Ram Steven Jackson is one of the most exciting running backs in the NFL. His style and his willingness to seek out contact make him a weekly highlight reel. Jackson is not only a pounding running back he is also elusive and able to break ankles of opposing linebackers in the open field. Jackson only rushed for 81 yards in the Rams losing effort but he earned every yard. Running game edge goes to the St Louis Rams and Steven Jackson.
St Louis Rams vs Oakland Raiders -7: Pick Against the Spread & Final Look
The St Louis Rams have an edge in the running game but the Oakland Raiders defense looked good against the best running back in the NFL, Chris Johnson. If the Oakland Raiders can stop the run and Steven Jackson it will force Sam Bradford to win this game in the air. The air is regulated by cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on the outside and it will be a tough time for Bradford connecting on any deep balls. Take the Oakland Raiders -7 and this line may go down so bet it late in the week.
