Philosophy or Science?
Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow set out to explain through scientific theory the origins of our universe in their new book, The Grand Design. The authors are not satisfied just studying how the universe works, but are searching for the answer as to why the universe is the way it is. They ask, Why is there something instead of nothing? Why do we exist? Why does this particular set of laws govern our universe and not some other set? Those questions sound more philosophical that scientific. Is this book about science or religion? An idea that is rejected by science is the Biblical account of creation which claims that the universe and all living organisms were created in six days by God. But, as we all know, Stephen Hawking would never believe such a fantastical account of the origins of our universe. Or would he?
The M-theory – “Model Dependent Realism”
The authors, Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow, have adopted a belief in what is being referred to as the M-theory. This is not a single theory, but a collection of theories that are being assembled together under one name. According to Hawking, The Grand Design is an “attempt to answer the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything.”
Here is an excerpt from The Grand Design, “We will describe how M-theory may offer answers to the question of creation. According to M-theory, ours is not the only universe. Instead, M-theory predicts that a great many universes were created out of nothing. Their creation does not require the intervention of some supernatural being or god. Rather, these multiple universes arise naturally from physical law. They are a prediction of science. Each universe has many possible histories and many possible states at later times, that is, at times like the present, long after their creation. Most of these states will be quite unlike the universe we observe and quite unsuitable for the existence of any form of life. Only a very few would allow creatures like us to exist. Thus our presence selects out from this vast array only those universes that are compatible with our existence. Although we are puny and insignificant on the scale of the cosmos, this makes us in a sense the lords of creation.”
Confusing Knowledge with Wisdom.
Isn’t it interesting how many scientists will belittle those who accept by faith the account of creation as described in the Bible. Yet, they will accept by faith any theory on the origins of our universe, as long as that theory excludes a Creator. Stephen Hawking might want to look up the definition of creation or create. Both of these definitions require an intelligent outside source to accomplish the act. If the universe created itself from nothing, where did these physical laws come from? This is what happens when science moves from studying what it can observe to theoretical physics. Isn’t their line of reasoning based purely on faith? Obviously, not a faith in a Creator, but a faith in their own intellect. Hawking and Mlodinow have made the mistake of confusing knowledge with wisdom.
How much knowledge do we really have about the universe?
According to modern astrophysics, our universe is made up of 74% dark energy, 22% dark matter, and 4% ordinary matter. With almost no understanding of either dark energy or dark matter, that leaves scientists with only a very small portion of the universe with which they can have some understanding. In fact, in an article on the Mail Online (Daily Mail – UK) website, it is reported that approximately 90% of the galaxies in the universe are not detected by ordinary surveys of the universe. In other words, 9 out of 10 galaxies are currently not being seen by the technology that is being used. With such a small percentage of the universe even being discovered, how can science make any more than a wild guess as to how the universe was created?
Man Rejects God. But, God Loves Man.
Stephen Hawking, in his book The Grand Design has displayed an amazing amount of faith in science. To reject God, after looking into the cosmos, shows an incredible amount of arrogance. But, It is a good thing for mankind that the Creator of the universe is patient and long suffering. Because, It is God’s desire to have a personal relationship with each and every person. In fact, He loved us so much that He sent His Son, Christ Jesus to guarantee that each and every one of us would have an opportunity to have an eternal relationship with Him.
