Steven Slater was certainly not looking for fame or to become a hero of all workers everywhere when he actually acted on his notion to be short back to a rude customer at the end of a flight just landed in New York City.
However, that’s exactly what Slater did as he got on the plane’s intercom, said a few choice words to a nasty customer, grabbed some beer and then exited the plane via the emergency slide.
In effect Slater’s actions were a “take this job and shove it” fantasy turned real, but as expected, his actions were with consequences. In exchange for pleading guilty to counts of criminal mischief, Slater was able to avoid going to jail on October 19 in Queens, New York.
For the two counts (one felony and one misdemeanor) Slater will enter a mental health program for one year, attend substance and alcohol abuse counseling and be placed on probation for one year as well. Additionally, Slater has been slapped with a $10,000 fine.
While Slater’s meltdown made him a hero and brought him at least 200,000 people who “like” his Facebook page, he is no longer with a job. However, he apparently is not too worried as he has been approached with several offers, including a reality TV show.
