Celebrities have made a trend out of unique baby names. It started with Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter Apple. To many people, the idea of a child being named after a common fruit was ridiculous. This same year, Courteney Cox and David Arquette had a girl whom they named Coco. These choices wouldn’t seem so strange compared to the celeb baby names that would follow, however. Just when it seems that the celebrity baby monikers can’t get any more bizarre, another one comes out that shocks everyone. It’s almost like celebrities are competing for attention with these names.
Nicole Richie and her fiancé Joel Madden welcomed a baby girl in January of 2008. More surprising than Richie becoming a mom was the name choice for her daughter: Harlow. Yes, the full name was Harlow Winter Kate Richie-Madden. The Richie-Maddens had one more surprise in store for fans following the birth of a son in 2009. They named him Sparrow. The bizarre moniker led to the question of a possible link between the new baby name and Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Eventually Joel Madden explained the origin of their choice to People: “There’s also the Captain Jack Sparrow connection. It reminded me of the Johnny Cash song ‘A Boy Named Sue.'” Madden also said that he “wanted to give him a name that he’s going to have to stand up for.”
Next up to take a crack at the bizarre celebrity name game was Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz. In the fall of 2008 the two welcomed a son, Bronx Mowgli Wentz. Several days later the Fallout Boy bassist answered to criticism surrounding the name choice during an appearance on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. According to the NY Daily News, Wentz said that the middle name is derived from Rudyard Kipling’s “Jungle Book” character. Apparently the adventure stories were something he and Simpson bonded over. As for the name Bronx, Wentz remarked that he and Ashlee had tossed the idea around ahead of time.
Most of us were happy for Nicole Kidman when she and husband Keith Urban announced that they were expecting. On July 7th, 2008 their precious delivery came, and the couple named her Sunday Rose. Now baby names were taking the form of days of the week. Although it sounds nice, Sunday also resembles a character name you’d see in a children’s book.
Out of all the previously mentioned choices, none compare to what Jason Lee decided for his son. It sounds unbelievable, but the actor actually named his son Pilot Inspektor. In 2009 the My Name is Earl star reportedly told EW that the name Pilot was inspired by an indie rock group called Grandaddy. “The opening track, ‘He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot,’ absolutely blew my mind when I first heard it. It was from this track that my wife, Beth, came up with the name Pilot for our son,” Lee explained. As for the second part, the actor’s rep told E! Online that it came as a suggestion from a friend, namely Danny Masterson’s younger brother.
Other celebrity baby names worthy of mention: Bluebell Madonna (Geri Halliwell); Ocean (Forest Whitaker); Sosie (Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick); Story (Jenna Elfman)
