Strikeforce is Showtime’s version of MMA fighting. Strikeforce claims some of the greatest MMA fighters in the world. They have Fedor and Nick Diaz as some of their top fighters. They also have women fighting on most of their shows. Chris Cyborg is the woman’s champion and she is tough. Tonight we will get to see Nick Diaz vs. KJ Noons 2 in the main event.
Tyron Woodley vs. Andre Galvao– The two 170 lb. men step into the ring. Tyron Woodley hits Galvoa with a powerful right hand. Galvoa tries to take the fight to the ground, but Woodley pounds on him. Woodley pounds Galvoa with another right hand. Galvoa tries to take Woodley down again and gets pounded. Tyron Woodley (TKO’s) Galvoa in the first round of their MMA match with powerful punches to the head. Woodley is a powerful puncher.
Many stars from the MMA world are in the stands to watch the fights. Even Hershel Walker is in the stands watching the fights. The stands are filled. Ryan Couture is in the stands along with Cung Lee. Even Dan Henderson is in the stands. Everybody who is anybody in Strikeforce is in the stands watching the fights.
Sarah Kaufman vs. Marloes Coenen-Sarah Kaufman is the Strikeforce woman’s Welterweight champion. This fight will be for the Strikeforce woman’s Welterweight champion. The women look beautiful before they walk into the ring to face each other. Now they will beat each other up. The women will have to fight for five rounds for the Woman’s Welterweight championship. The women feel each other out. They throw a few punches and kicks at each other. Coenen has the height and reach advantage. Sarah Kaufman believes she has the strength advantage. Coenen hits Kaufman with a huge right. The two woman wrestle for position. Coenen seemed to throw the best punches in round one and I would have given her the round.
Kaufman comes out in round two punching. Kaufman shows her strength when the two women wrestle. The crowd boos because the standup wrestling is boring. Coenen throws a hard right kick to the body. It hurt just watching it connect with Kaufman. These women are tough. Kaufman seems to be trying to tire out Coenen, but it makes the fight boring. Coenen throws Kaufman, but Kaufman counters and lands on top of Coenen. Kaufman controlled round two and won it easily.
Kaufman gets Coenen on the ground in round three and tries to pound on her. Coenen tries to use her submission ability on Kaufman. Kaufman uses ground and pound on Coenen. Coenen puts an arm bar on Kaufman and wins the Strikeforce woman’s Welterweight Championship. This was a great fight and a great finish for Coenen.
Josh Thompson vs. JZ Cavalcante-Calvalcante has a big right hand, but Josh Thompson should be the better of the two lightweight fighters. Big John McCarthy will be the referee for this fight. The two lightweights meet in the center of the ring. Calvalcante puts a lock on Thompson and tries to get him to the ground. Thompson fights off Cavalcante and the two fights break their clinches. Calvalcante hits Thompson with a big punch and puts him in a guillotine choke. Thompson finally gets out of the choke. He is now on top of Cavalcante. Now Thompson uses some ground and pound on Cavalcante. Calvalcante tries to put Thompson in a submission. Thompson gets Calvalcante in an arm choke near the end of round one. The bell saves Calvalcante. What a first round.
The two men begin round two wrestling for position. The clinch is boring and neither man gets advantage. Josh Thompson finally takes Cavalcante down halfway through the round and gets his back. Josh Thompson throws some right hands to the face of Cavalcante. Thompson controls Cavalcante on the ground. Thompson wins round two with his ground game.
Thompson tries to take Cavalcante, but he gets taken down instead. Cavalcante gets the mount on Thompson. Thompson tries to keep Cavalcante controlled. Thompson tries to reverse, but Cavalcante stops him. Thompson gets back up on to his feet with two minutes left in round three. Cavalcante gets Thompson back down again and pounds him with punches. Cavalcante is just holding Thompson down on the ground. Thompson tries some submissions, but they don’t work. Thompson wins the unanimous decision. One judge gave Thompson 30-27 which is impossible. The fight was much closer than the judge’s scores.
Nick Diaz vs. KJ Noons– for the Strikeforce Welterweight championship which Nick Diaz holds. KJ Noons beat Nick Diaz in their first meeting. Will Nick Diaz get revenge tonight? KJ Noons is a great boxer and Nick Diaz has a great ground game. This will be a five round fight for the Strikeforce Welterweight championship.
The two fighters step into the ring ready to fight for the Strikeforce Welterweight championship. The two fighters fight back and forth. Diaz hits Noons with a good right hand and knocks Noons down on to the ground. What a surprise to Noons and the crowd. Noons fights his way back up to his feet. Diaz hits Noons with a right hook. Diaz is hitting Noons with ugly but effective punches. Diaz has a four inch reach advantage and is using it well. He should have won round one.
Noons hits Diaz and cuts him. Diaz is now grumpy and bleeding. Noons hits Diaz with a left and Diaz hits him back with a right. Diaz throws some punches and a kick. Noons has blood trickling out of his nose. Noons and Diaz exchange some good body punches. Noons wins round two with his boxing. Nick Diaz goes back to his corner with a bloody face.
Diaz lands some nice punches at the start of round three. Diaz is hitting Noons with quick short punches and trying to take him out of his game. Diaz hits Noons with a knee. He is trying to keep the boxer off his game. Diaz ends the round with a couple of kicks. He may have taken the third round.
Two tired fighters come out for the fourth round. Diaz tries a few kicks to change it up. He hits Noons with a nice body shot. Noons comes back with an uppercut. Noons connects with a straight right. Nick Diaz hits back and bloodies up Noons face a little bit. Diaz connects with a left hook. Noons throws a good left and Diaz starts to pepper Noon’s head with some quick punches. Diaz targets the body of Noons. Diaz mixes in a knee. He is a better boxer than he was three years ago. Noons throws some good punches. Diaz hits Noons with a couple of punches and a good knee. Diaz may have one round four with more activity than Noons.
Nick Diaz starts out round five with a few kicks. He goes for a takedown, but misses it. Noons lands a good kick to the side of the face of Noons. Diaz grabs Noons head and hits him with a bunch of punches. Noons hits Diaz with a good left hook. Diaz hits him back with a right. Noons hits Diaz with a good uppercut. The fight ends with two bloody tired fighters both thinking they won the fight. I would have given the fight to Diaz, but let’s see what the judges have to say. Noons landed more punches in the fight, but Diaz looked better. Nick Diaz wins the fight with a unanimous decision over KJ Noons. He retains the Strikeforce Welterweight championship. The judges scored the fight just like I would have scored the fight.
Showtime’s Strikeforce gave a good show tonight. The fights were competitive and interesting. The action was great. Nick Diaz and KJ Noons fought five very exciting rounds of championship MMA fighting. Nick Diaz proved he can box with a boxer. This fight proved Nick Diaz deserves to be the Strikeforce Welterweight champion.
