Did you know?
The difference between Republic and Democracy is more than fundamental differences. Remember … “And to the Republic for which it stands…” This of course is from our Pledge of Allegiance. The United States is indeed a Republic.
What is a Republic?
A Republic is where people, like you and I, pick people to be their voice (representative). These representatives speak for the people and make policies on behalf of the people they serve. Some examples are Senators, Governors, Mayors, and the President of the United States.
What is a Democracy?
A Democracy is different from a republic because a democracy is where people decide policy matters through large meetings such as town hall meetings and turn in their decisions through ballots. Think of a lot of people deciding on what they want; writing their answer on a piece of paper; then turning that paper into a large ballot box. The word democracy really means rule the people or better yet, the people make the decisions. Sounds almost simplistic but true. The majority makes the decision on important matters.
Republican versus Democrat
This is a subject close to the heart of America. It is the foundation of what our country is founded on; the ability to choose how we believe. Each American has a choice of to believe what they want about the economy, the government, politics, morals, and much more.
As each American decides on their beliefs, they then can decide which Political Party they will be a part of: Republican, Democratic, or Independent. Once each American chose their Party, they then can vote in American Elections. These elections are important to our country as each American gets the privilege to share their thoughts on what should be done in American.
Each American must be at least 18 years of age in order to vote.
What is a Republican?
Many Republicans today are very Conservative in their beliefs. This is partly because they adhere to the beliefs of the early years of American; such as our Founding Fathers.
Republicans tend to be family rooted, believing that there is value in the family and instilling values into the children; such as faith, hope, love, goodwill, human decency, and abstinence until marriage.
Many Republicans tend to believe that God created marriage for one man, one woman. God is the maker of all and created marriage to be a beautiful gift that is for man and woman. Marriage, family life, and the relationship between the husband, wife, and kids are vital to our country.
Republicans tend to prefer less government and more people getting out there and doing the work. Small businesses are one way that people can build their own success; and as such, Republicans tend to support small businesses.
Remember that every politician (person is office) is different, as are their beliefs. Not every Republican or Democrat may or may not believe the same way. That is why we have Conservative and Liberal Republicans.
What is a Democrat?
A Democrat could consider himself as conservative, liberal, or even moderate. This depends on how strong he/she believes about certain issues such as government, moral issues, and free market.
Many Democrats are for Universal Health Care (insurance provided by government in which each American must pay for). A Democrat believes that the government is responsible to provide those in need, such as those living in poverty. A Democrat also supports the rights of workers versus the rights of management.
A Democrat usually believes in the choice of the American in issues such as abortion and gays and lesbians. Many Democrats believe a woman has a right to have an abortion and it is not murder. They may also believe that conception does not happen until the baby is born. Simply put, a fetus isn’t life.
They also believe that gays and lesbians have a right to be married just like a man and wife. They may pursue rights for gays and lesbians in issues such as insurance, adoption, and marriage.
Remember that not every Republican or Democrat will believe the same way. Each American may take “a little here and a little there” mentality to decide on how they believe. That is how we have Conservative, Liberal, and Moderates of both parties. These descriptions are on a majority and not minority.
What is Conservative?
To be a Conservative, a person wants less government and more responsibility upon each American to create their wealth and prosperity; not depending on the government to provide anything. Traditional American beliefs such as strong moral values would be another description of a Conservative. They believe that God created human life upon conceptions. To abort a child is considered murder in God’s eyes.
A Conservative prefers the death penalty for crimes that deserve death. They appreciate the prisons but believe death is needed for certain heinous crimes. They also believe that the environment is something that each American is responsible for. Although they want clean water, air, and environment they think liberals tend to go overboard. They believe the changes we see are due to natural causes.
What is a Liberal?
Government action is needed to create equal opportunity to each American. No one should be in need and the government is needed to make sure of this. A liberal may believe that the government is needed in many aspects of our country.
A Liberal may believe that a baby (fetus) isn’t a human. A baby (fetus) isn’t a life. The right to have an abortion is the right of the woman and is her choice. She has the right and choice to decide if she wants to carry the baby full term or have an abortion.
The death penalty, to a Liberal, is a big no-no. They would just assume have the death penalty destroyed. As long as the criminal is behind bars, that is adequate punishment.
Liberals are usually “Go Green” and intent on stopping industrial businesses from harming the environment. They believe that global warming is caused by the enormous production of carbon dioxide in our country.
