Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, researchers have published a new study in the NEJM (New England Journal of Medicine) announce that a compelling number of patients with fibromyalgia have great reactions to Tia Chi to relieve joint pain and other symptoms caused by the condition.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition of vast soft tissue pain associated with weakness, fatigue and sleep problems. The cause of this condition is still not determined. It appears more frequently in middle aged women. It is estimated that 200 million persons world wide suffer from this condition.
Signs and symptoms of fibromyalgia include morning stiffness, anxiety, sleep problems, fatigue and pain. It is similar to arthritis and often viewed as a rheumatic condition that causes joint and soft tissue pain.
Tia Chi also referred to as Tia Chi Chuan is a blend of slow gentle movements, meditation, relaxation and deep breathing. It has been acknowledged to aide with muscle strength, posture, balance, sleep and coordination. Dr. Chenchen Wang and associates at Tufts University School of Medicine, assigned 66 persons with fibromyalgia in this study. They had separated them into two groups. One group participated in a 12 week Tia Chi program. The other group had participated in a 12 week wellness education program which had included stretching exercises twice weekly.
The participants in the Tia Chi group had experienced considerable symptom progress, meanwhile the other group had very little improvement. The participants had received a questionnaire.
The Tia Chi group had noted improvements in pain, mood, sleep and quality of life.
The researchers concluded that a much larger study should be conducted in this area.
