A new study out of London has found that alcohol is more dangerous than illegal drugs such as heroin or crack cocaine. The study was financed by Britain’s Centre for Crime and Justice Studies and was published online in the medical journal, Lancet. (Read Drug harms in the UK: a multicriteria decision analysis).
Reseachers analyzed many aspects of alcohol and other drugs, such as: the drug’s physiological harm, how addictive the drug is, and the drug’s wider social and environmental damages (Read Study finds alcohol most dangerous drug).
When solely considering environmental harm and negative social effect, alcohol, heroin, and crack cocaine were the ‘deadliest’. Overall, alcohol won the prize by outranking all the other substances, including marijuana, ecstasy, and LSD.
Alcohol scored so highly because of its wide use and destructive consequences not only for the drinker, but for those in the drinker’s social circle.
What about legalizing marijuana, California? As Wim van den Brink, a professor of psychiatry and addiction at the University of Amersterdam, said, “What governments decide is illegal is not always based on science…Drugs that are legal cause at least as much damage, if not more, than drugs that are illicit.”
