The topic of this lesson is the Saviour, and it covers the book of Isaiah (especially chapters 7-39) in the Bible. There is also some general information about studying Isaiah. This lesson correlates with lesson thirty-seven in the Old Testament Gospel Doctrine Sunday School Class of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This lesson plan can be used by Sunday School or other church group teachers, Bible study groups, or individuals to enrich their study of the Bible. If you are teaching, feel free to adapt the material to the needs of your class and as prompted by the Spirit.

The talk “Ten Keys to Understanding Isaiah” by Elder Bruce R. McConkie from the October 1973 Ensign
Introduction to Isaiah
There is a perception that Isaiah is difficult to understand. However, he doesn’t have to be. Elder McConkie taught us ten keys, or tips, to better understanding this book of scripture. As a class, go through the tips that he gives. This talk also includes a chapter-by-chapter overview of Isaiah. It can be useful to get an idea of what is happening before you start to read.
Have a class member read Isaiah 28:9-10. We all learn a little bit at a time, “line upon line” and “precept upon precept”. If you don’t understand everything the first or even second time that you read Isaiah, don’t stress about it. Just make sure that you continue to study and that your understanding steadily grows. It is like climbing a staircase. You can’t suddenly jump to the top of the staircase. You have to climb up one stair at a time. As we study Isaiah, we uncover deeper layers of meaning and are able to move further up the staircase.
Isaiah Testified of the Savior
Of all of Isaiah’s prophecies, the most important and beautiful were his prophecies of the Saviour. He testified of Christ. He looked forward to his life (Isaiah was writing approximately 700 years before Christ’s life). Read Isaiah 9:2, 6-7.
Listen to Handel’s Messiah, especially the “For Unto Us…” segment.
Divide the class into six groups. Give each group scriptures about the Savior to discuss. Tell them to feel free to incorporate their personal testimonies and experiences as well as any other gospel resources that are relevant.
Group #1: Isaiah 7:14-15; The Bible Dictionary entry “Christ”
Group #2: Isaiah 12; Isaiah 28:16; Helaman 5:12
Group #3: Isaiah 22:21-22; 2 Nephi 9:41, 45; Isaiah 30:18-21
Group #4: Isaiah 25:1,4; Isaiah 32:2-4, 15-18; Psalms 27:5; Matthew 11:28-30
Group #5: Isaiah 25:8; Revelations 21:4; Isaiah 33:22
Group #6: Isaiah 26:3-4, 16-19; D&C 138:11-18, 23-24, 50
Watch the video “Isaiah Prophesied of Christ” from the Old Testament Resources DVD.
Conclude the class by sharing your testimony of the Savior and gratitude for scriptures that can help us to learn of Him.
If there is time, you may want to have the class sing a hymn about Jesus Christ. For example, “I Know That MY Redeemer Lives.”
