Whether you’re a child with many pairs of silly sunglasses, or you’re an adult who has reading glasses, sunglasses and other types, it can be difficult to store them all in one place. Sure, you can buy eyeglass cases for them but you have to keep opening them up and closing them. Plus, you can’t see them all at once. To make an easy storage pole that will hold all your eyewear and keep it from getting scratched you can use a few things you might have around your house.
Pringles potato chip cans work great to make a storage pole for your sunglasses. Remove the lids from two cans and tape them together so that one is stacked on top of the other. Don’t use a lot of bulky tape; just use a piece of Scotch or masking tape to hold them together temporarily. Before taping them drop some small rocks or other heavy objects into one can then place the other can on top of it.
Choose the type of fabric or paper you want to use for decorating the can. Felt, fake fur, gift wrap or even scrapbook paper all work well to cover the can. It’s really easy to cover it when you cut a piece of cloth or paper to go around the cans and a little extra to overlap. Cut the paper so that it’s long enough to cover both cans with several inches to tuck down inside the top can. After wrapping the cans, taping the seams, and tucking the excess inside the can you can then create a way for the pole to hold the sunglasses.
Wooden dowels will help you finish the sunglasses pole. You’ll find the dowels in many shapes and sizes at any craft store. Although you can often buy assorted dowels in a bag you’ll save money if you buy one long dowel and cut it yourself with a kitchen knife or small handsaw. Choose a dowel that’s only a quarter-inch to a half-inch in diameter. Whether you cut them yourself or buy them in a pack you’ll need several of them to make the pole.
Poke holes from one side of the can to the other using an ice pick or nail. Try to make the holes exactly opposite of each other and leave large spaces between each set of holes. Now insert the dowels so that each one goes through one side of the can and out the other. The dowels should all be the same length and should be long enough so that they stick out a couple of inches on each side. A little hot glue will hold them in place.
Choose something to use for holding the bridge of the sunglasses. The items can be beads, foam plugs, tacks, small pieces of rubber tubing or something similar. Glue these down the front of the cans, positioning them so that there’s one bridge holder for each set of dowels. After these are in place you can then choose something to mount to the top so that you cover the open hole of the can. The object can be a painted Styrofoam ball, a stuffed animal or even a painted cardboard disk. When you’re finished simply set each pair of glasses so that the earpieces rest on the dowels and the bridge rests on the beads or other objects. It’s a handy little organizer that allows you to see all your sunglasses at once and keeps them protected from scratches or other damage.
