After last night’s Episode 2 of Survivor’s newest season, set in Nicaragua, some viewers are wondering if the long-running reality show is losing it’s touch. The craziness seen on Episode 2 of Survivor: Nicaragua certainly had this die hard fan under whelmed, and feeling more like I’d watched an episode of the Jerry Springer show, rather than an episode of Survivor.
For those who are not familiar with the Survivor: Nicaragua series, the producers tried something new this time around, by separating Survivor participants by age. There is a “young” team, named La Flor, which includes tribe members 30 years old and younger. Alternately, the “old” team, named Espada, includes all members aged 40 and older. Separating the members of Survivor: Nicaragua in this way seemed like it might be interesting at first, but due to the crazy personalities of certain members, it’s been anything but interesting. Instead, especially after episode 2, Survivor: Nicaragua just seems stupid.
I don’t know how other Survivor fans feel, but I think it should be a complete deal-breaker when tribe members start stealing, and destroying, the personal property of other tribe members. I first thought that when Russell had his hat stolen in a previous season. In episode 2 of Survivor: Nicaragua, Holly from the older tribe, quietly stole Dan’s expensive shoes, filled them with sand, and then dumped them in the river. It was ridiculous, and stupid.
The stupidity continued with NaOnka from the La Flor tribe. What were producers even thinking went they cast NaOnka? I mean, after watching Survivor for all of these years, I do understand that it’s common for a few troublemaker-type personalities to be thrown in with everyone else. However, after NaOnka’s paranoid flip out over a missing sock, leading to her subsequent theft of Fabio’s socks, and ending with her ridiculous “Chaquita-from-the-hood” confrontation with him when he tried to ask about his socks, I imagine that more than one member of Survivor: Nicaragua is pretty pissed off at the producers for sticking them out in the middle of nowhere with someone so unstable. NaOnka isn’t just irritating, or awkward. She’s a nut job. If there was anyone left unconvinced of that, they certainly would not have been after seeing her lunatic spiel at Tribal Council.
Why the tribe didn’t oust NaOnka last night is a complete mystery to me. After his idiotic comments about gays, I too was glad to see Shannon go, but tribe members would have been better off getting rid of NaOnka first. Episode 2 wasn’t fun or entertaining; it was stressful and agitating. I don’t watch Survivor to feel stressed and agitated. If the stupidity continues during the next episode or two, this Survivor fan is going to find something else to do on Wednesdays at 7pm.
