Survivor begins its 21 season sending the cast to the jungles of Nicaragua. I can hardly believe it’s been ten years since the first show came on the air. I remember all the hype surrounding the new CBS show. I thought the whole idea of dropping a bunch of people on a desert island and having them fend for food and shelter sounded pretty boring.
I had just moved to Wisconsin and because Survivor Palau Tiga had two castaways from Wisconsin, Dirk Been and Sue Hawk, I decided to watch the first show. Earlier in the evening I had spoke to my son back east and he shared my feelings about the show, but acknowledged he too was going to watch “Just the first night”. When the show ended I can’t remembered who called who but the first words were, “Oh my gosh, did you see…”
and we continued talking about the show for the next hour.
When time came for the final tribal council I threw a Survivor party and invited friends over to my apartment transformed into a desert island with Survivor Logo on the wall, palm trees, coconuts and raffia to watch Richard Hatch walk away with the $1,000,000.
Over the years I waxed and waned watching Survivor, depending what was going on in my life. Today Survivor is part of America’s Pop Culture. There are Survivor video games, a Survivor trivia game, a Survivor ride, episodes of past seasons on DVD, and lots of Survivor clothing.
I can honestly say I am so looking forward to Survivor Nicaragua, Forever Young. It should be fun watching Jimmy Johnson, former Dallas Cowboys Football Coach competing in challenges of skill. It show be interesting to see how he interacts with men and women off the field and in the jungle.
This time around I have decided to become an interactive participant with the show. I went online to www.cbs.com/survivor and signed up as a Survivor Ultimate Fan. According to the site, The Ultimate Survivor Fan is an interactive social game that rewards fans for being an active fan of the show. Points are awarded for playing Fantasy Survivor, commenting on the videos and posting messages on the message boards.
Just for singing up I received 200 bonus points so I am off and running and the show hasn’t even started yet. So what does the winner of the Ultimate Fan Game win? What every fan of any season of Survivor would want…a trip to the finale. So while I wait for Survivor Nicaragua to begin I think I will plan a Survivor Party. Wonder what they eat in Nicaragua? Hmmm…
