Tangled review scores are uncommonly high for Disney. Although the Tangled review ratings aren’t quite at Pixar levels, they are as close as Disney has gotten in a while. Nowadays, if their animation department wants to be attached to classic family films, they attach themselves to Pixar. But their non-Pixar hand-drawn and CGI efforts have been more mixed over the years. However, the reception for Tangled suggests that they found some new luck by going back to – and reimagining – an old, favorite genre.
The story of Rapunzel is one of the most famous in fairy tale lore. Trapped in a tower, all the Princess could do was let down her giant golden hair. But in this version, Rapunzel does a lot more as she breaks out of her prison and goes out into the world with a thief on the lam.
Thus far, Tangled scores have been pretty favorable on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is at 89 percent positive, with only seven rotten reviews out of 65, and a 7.5 average rating. For Disney, it qualifies as their biggest critical success in years outside of their Pixar films.
Practically no one is calling it original, even though it has new twists on the Rapunzel legend. Yet modern takes on fairy tales are hardly new in the Shrek era, as even Disney already satirized these stories in Enchanted. However, it appears the company has wrung one more success story from their favorite genre.
Some of the comments even call it the best Disney film since Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King. That might be some faint praise, since the studio’s efforts have been so mixed in the last 15 years. Still, it may be enough to prove that the Mouse has some power left.
This weekend would appear to be an uphill battle, however. Although this is the biggest new movie of a crowded Thanksgiving weekend, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 still casts a large shadow. But since that franchise is becoming less family-friendly for younger audiences, this movie could capture enough of that demographic to make a dent.
The Disney brand still holds some sway on its own, with 3D expected to give it another little boost. The positive Tangled reviews are a good sign for the company, although box office would help more – especially after The Princess and the Frog stalled last year.
But even if this film struggles a bit, Disney still has Tron: Legacy to hang their hopes on next month. As for their regular animation brand, the review count for Tangled has given them a needed leg back up.
