As everybody in the Mission knows, food is a highlight of the neighborhood. One eatery in particular has out-ranked them all, though. The Tartine Bakery at 18th and Guerrero is a breakfast favorite for Mission district locals and now the place has the ranking to prove it. Zagat rated the bakery in their latest scorning of restaurants from all over the nation.
The guide has this to say about the bakery at 18th and Guerrero:
With its “lines out the door” and “insane waits,” “you’ll want to hate” this “hipster”-packed Mission patisserie with “no obvious sign (just follow the smell of butter)” and “cramped seating,” but nothing “can trump” its “mind-blowing pastries,” “eponymous open-faced treats” and “bread that comes out of the oven exactly at 5 p.m.”; sure, a slew slam “lackadaisical” service, but no matter: most just “keep going back.”
It rates 27 on the just-released food scores.
Sure the hipster comment is annoying because many Mission district residents are highly educated, creative and techy individuals, but Zagat hit the heart of Tartine’s sweet spot. Tartine offers innovative pastries, such as the banana cream tart or the perfectly French eclair.
Stop by Tartine Bakery for more than sweets; they also offer a wide variety of sandwiches, and grab and go breakfasts that will satisfy all walks of life…even the hipsters.
