An old shoe isn’t attractive nor appealing to anyone! Well, maybe a dog. They love to chew on an old shoe and use it as a toy. Other than dogs does anything or anyone like an old shoe? Probably not. That is, until you turn it into a unique bird feeder! When you do that, you can set the feeder on the rails of your deck or hang it from a tree. The birds will flock to see what kinds of goodies you’ve supplied!
Although a tennis shoe is perfect for creating the unusual bird feeder you can also use some other shoes. If the finished feeder will be set on a deck you don’t need to select a shoe that has strings. If it will be hanging bird feeder, though, the best choice is one that has shoestrings that you can use as the hanger. The best shoe is not one that is made to be a “high top”. Therefore, shoes that come up and around the ankle area are not ideal. Other shoes work fine whether they be children’s shoes or adults, men’s or women’s.
If the bird feeder you’re making will sit and not hang weight it down with a rock. Simply slip the rock into the toe of the shoe. Cut a piece of stiff plastic, like from a milk jug, and wedge it into the opening of the shoe. Position it so that it goes between the bottom of the shoe and the tongue. When it’s in place you’ll only be able to pour birdfeed into the heel area of the shoe. The little plastic wall prevents bird seed from sliding down into unreachable areas.
If you’re making a hanging bird feeder from the tennis shoe you won’t need the weight in the toe area. You will, however, need to make the little plastic wall. For a sitting bird feeder just pour birdseed into the shoe and set it out on your deck or in another location.
If you’re making a hanging birdfeeder tie the ends of the shoelaces together to make a hanger. Hold the knot to see how the shoe hangs. If needed, remove the shoestring from two sets of eyelets so that the shoe will hang more level.
There are ways to make the shoe bird feeder more attractive. Use waterproof glue to attach wiggly eyes and other craft supplies to create a shoe that looks like a bumble bee. Or, use fabric paints to decorate the shoe with flowers and leaf images. The shoe bird feeder will grab the attention of all your flying friends!
