Glass or plastic jars, with lid
Dried Split Peas
Dried Kidney Beans
Black Eyed Peas
Fabric and String/Yarn
You can buy glass or plastic jars at your local craft store.
When buying the fabric, remnants (scraps) will work perfectly. You want to get earthy colors and design patterns.
Pour the corn kernels, dried split peas, white rice, and black eyed peas in the jar in layers.
They do not have to be poured in any particular order but you want to pour enough in to make a ring around the jar.
The layers in the jar will make all of the difference in the appearance of the jars.
If someone does rice, black-eyed peas, rice, blacked eyed peas vs. Dried Split Peas and Rice, the look will be completely different. This is where creativity can really be expressed.
You can write hidden messages and place them in the jar. Messages like ‘I love you’ and ‘I am grateful for you’ make great inserts, especially if the jar is going to be a present.
Once the design is perfect, top it off with wax so that it does not move. You can still do this craft without wax, just make sure you fill it all the way and secure the top tightly.
At the very end, tie the cloth on the lid of the jar.
When you are done, you have a creative earthy Thanksgiving decoration.
