It’s fun to decorate for holidays, no matter what holiday it is. It makes the mood more festive. Below find some ideas for fun decorations for your Thanksgiving holiday.
1) Pumpkin Theme
Buy the small pumpkins, or “Spookies” as one farm called them and place them all over the house. Since they are small, you can place three in a basket or a bowl and put it on a table, bathroom vanity, living room mantle or end table.
Large pumpkins can be lined up outside on a walkway or around flower beds. They can be stacked up inside of the door in the foyer near a coat rack or umbrella stand.
Pumpkins can be painted, drawn on, adorned with sequins, stuck with stickers and so much more to add a little festive color to the already brilliant orange.
2) Gourds and Maize Theme
A gourd is in the same family as a pumpkin and can come in different colors. A lot of gourds that are empty inside are halved into shells and used as decorative bowls or artwork. Gourds also look good in a bowl or on a dining room table.Gourds can be carved, hollowed out and used as instruments or painted and “crafted” just like the suggestions above for pumpkins.
Maize or corn on the cob can be found this time of year at your supermarket or farm stand. The cob is dried out and comes in beautiful Autumn colors like red, purple, gold etc…They are beautiful for decorations whether you hang it on your door or put it on a pretty tray on a table.
3. Crafts Theme
Making your own Thanksgiving crafts (whether it be a child or adult craft) is always a great way to decorate your house as well as personalize it.
4. Pottery and Leaves Theme
Pottery can be beautiful, and especially during the Autumn season, the natural reds and oranges of some clay look beautiful around the house. Use pottery on tables and in bathrooms and fill them with colorful leaves from outside.
Painting leaves – last year, my daughter found leaves that had just fallen from a couple of our trees. The red ones she painted red and the yellow ones she painted with yellow and they lasted all year, as if the paint coated it to keep the freshness in. We used them again this year. Of course you can pain them any color you want, they will be pretty no matter what, and put them in some lovely pottery.
Use lovely Autumn colored pottery for your table settings. The colors of the plates and bowls will enhance the colors of the traditional Thanksgiving food.
5. Football Theme
It may be a bit unconventional, but serious fans who love football, and are especially fans of the teams that play on Thanksgiving every year (Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions) would enjoy this immensely (even if their teams are not doing so well.)
Banners, shirts, flags, team colors and more can be used for plates, tablecloths, mantles, bathrooms etc…
A pie or cake can be shaped like a football or helmet with the colors of the team(s). Mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes can also be molded into any shape, a football player, a trophy or a team mascot.
