Dinner with extended family;
Tables set with good china on white tablecloths,
Mom, aunts and grandmas bustling about the kitchen
Preparing a sumptuous feast.
Delectable smells of roasting turkey, pumpkin and apple pies,
Homemade dressing, and dinner rolls baking.
Impatient fingers sneaking an olive or carrot stick,
Trying to stave off the hunger for the real feast to come.
At last, all gather around the table,
Which displays an abundance of appetizing delights.
Before plunging in to devour in minutes
What has taken hours to prepare,
All bow their heads to offer thanks
To the Creator and Sustainer of life,
Not only for the nourishment set before them,
But also for life, health, love and so many more blessings.
In the aftermath of the feast,
Bellies full and content,
The men settle into favorite chairs
To “watch” the football game through closed eyes.
The women gather up the remains of dinner
And chat as they return the kitchen to its
Then sit at the table to chat some more.
The young folks find a game to play,
Or sit and talk amongst themselves,
Laughing and enjoying each others’ company
As the afternoon turns to evening.
So it has gone, from one generation to the next,
And so may it continue for generations to come—
Family togetherness, and thankfulness to God
For all He has blessed us with.
