The second episode had teams flying to Africa and dealing with taxicab drama, market place haggling and colorful coffins.
Last time teams checked into Eastnor Castle in England. Jill and Thomas were the first team to arrive, so not only did they win the Express Pass (which lets them bypass a task of their choice) but they also were the first team to depart. Upon ripping open their clue they found out that they would be flying to Accra, Ghana where they would have to go to Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to find their next clue. Kwame Nkrumah was the first Ghanaian prime minister and president when the country achieved independence from the British in 1957.
There was no airport drama since all the teams were on the same six-hour flight on Virgin.
In Accra, teams raced out of the airport and got cabs to the park. When stopped in traffic several teams’ cabs were solicited by beggars. The Capella guys didn’t give any money and claimed the beggar spit on them! Reunited birth mom Andie gave out some change saying she hoped the karma would come back to her.
At the park the clue instructed the teams to go to Makola Market where one team member had to sell 15 cedi (local currency ~$10) worth of sunglasses. The minimum they could sell a pair for was 3 cedi but there was no limit on the maximum price.
Tattooed team Nick and Vicki got there first but Nick decided to sell the sunglasses and wasn’t very good at it. The other teams with blonds decided to smartly use their blond prowess to attract and sell their glasses: Jill, Stephanie and one of the blond volleyball girls – who said the market smelled. The shopping hosts were ecstatic because selling stuff is what they know how to do. The blond Brook was very positive and upbeat and quickly sold the right amount. Asian-American father Michael said this market reminded him of when he grew up in Taiwan. He did the selling and also sold very quickly much to the surprise and delight of Kevin. Asian-American Kat decided to sell instead of blond teammate – who unhelpfully yelled from the sidelines. Father and daughter Gary and Mallory had some trouble with their cab and got to the market last but Mallory quickly sold the glasses to her first customer.
HSN hosts Brook and Claire opened the next clue instructing them to go to the June 4th Area and find Peace Motor Spare Parts. Here they found a Detour to Tune-In (install a TV antenna and get a satisfactory signal from a homeowner) or Check-Out (transport a colorful and whimsical coffin to a shop) to get their next clue.
Brook and Claire, Michael and Kevin and Chad and Stephanie did the TV antenna installation quickly and got their next clue instructing them to go to the Pit Stop at Kaneshie Market. Also doing this Detour were Team Capella but they weren’t successful so they abandoned and tried for the coffin one. Nick and Vicki and Gary and Mallory were the last teams to do this task.
Volleyball players Katie and Rachel, Jill and Thomas, Nat and Kat and Andie and Jenna did Check-Out. This task was actually pretty easy because there were helpful, strong locals who helped push and carry the coffins up a ramp and stairs.
First to check in at the mat were Brook and Claire where they were greeted by Phil and a local woman with a giant tub of dried fish balanced on her head. Team number two was the volleyball girls. Team three: Michael and Kevin. Four: Chad and Steph. Five: Jill and Thomas. Six and seven were Team Capella and Nat and Kat. Eight was Nick and Vicki. And finally team number nine was Gary and Mallory. The last team to arrive was Andie and Jenna who were eliminated.
Next time: Tattooed teammate Nick loses it with Vicki and the African heat gets to the older competitors.
