The first episode had airport drama, lost drivers and introduced the Express Pass. This season is all about blond white gals because over half the teams have a blond on board. After the elimination there was even less diversity.
Phil Keoghan introduced the teams in Gloucester, Massachusetts where they were ferried in by fishing boats. Firstly he said that this would be the “most grueling” race ever and then he said that the first team to finish the first leg would receive the Express Pass. This pass would allow the team to skip any task and get a clue to the next task. Then the teams raced for their bags where the first clue told them they had to fly to London and drive themselves to Stonehenge.
The teams then popped into Smart cars and drove themselves to Logan Airport. The twist on the flights was that the first flight only had room for three teams and got in 30 minutes earlier than the second flight. African-American theater team Ron and Tony got to the airport first because they used their compass and secured themselves on the first flight. Then dating couples Jill (blond hair dresser) and Thomas (GF obviously doesn’t do his hair) and Chad (thick-necked knucklehead) and Stephanie (another blond albeit short-haired) got onto the first flight. All the other teams got on the second flight but everyone seemed happy and friendly at the airport.
In London various teams had problems driving and the second flight teams pretty much caught up with the first flight. Ron and Tony got lost. Reunited brunette birth mother and daughter Andie and Jenna had only spent three days together prior to running the race. Andie had trouble with the left hand stick shift and got stalled in the middle of traffic. Chad and Stephanie circled the airport and we were introduced to his meat-head personality; which he blames on playing football. Father and daughter team Gary and Mallory (surprise… blond) got a flat tire but Gary changed it quickly.
Doctor friends Nat (blond) and Kat (Asian yay diversity!) got to Stonehenge first. Here the clue told them to find the castle that’s opposite of nor’easter. Some locals told them that it was Eastnor Castle so off they went. Then Jill and Thomas and Home Shopping Network hosts Brook (blond) and Claire got the clue. Nat and Kat and Brook and Claire teamed up when they both asked directions at a gas station. Ron and Tony were the last team to open their clue because they got lost and drove in the wrong direction even though they had their compass.
At Eastnor Castle the teams had to climb up a ladder while medieval characters dumped water and sludge on them. They then had to get a flag, carry it to a tortoise-shell boat, pull themselves across a river and find a knight to get their next clue. All teams had trouble with the boat because it involved good balance in order for water to not get in. After a few tries the first three teams pulled themselves across. Chad almost had an aneurysm trying to get across on the boat without sinking. It was especially funny when he lost it when Capella singers Connor and Jonathan (that he dubbed “nerds”) passed him. Asian-American father and son Michael and Kevin also had a lot of trouble getting across until Gary and Mallory got in their boat and they could see how to do it. Biker tattooed couple Nick and Vicki didn’t see the boats right away even though they walked right by them.
The next clue was a Roadblock. One team member had to launch a watermelon in a sling into a suit of armor and knock it over to receive their next clue given to them by a juggler on a ball. Thomas, Claire and Nat all took on the task. Thomas finished first and the clue said to find the pit stop on the grounds of the castle. Along with partner Jill, Thomas found the pit stop first and they were awarded the Express Pass. Claire was having trouble with the task and at one point the sling got turned around and the watermelon went straight into her face. She said it was numb but Brook told her she had to finish the task; which she did even though Brook was sort of laughing at her (what a great teammate). Nat also had some trouble but eventually knocked down the knight and her team came in second. Connor and Jonathan passed Brook and Claire to be third. B + C got fourth. Then came blond volleyball players and mean girls Katie and Rachel. Sixth was Gary and Mallory and Seventh Michael and Kevin. Chad and Stephanie finally found the pit stop after wandering around for a loooong time. Then it was Andie and Jenna and finally Nick and Vicki. Ron and Tony floundered all day and were the last team to arrive where Phil informed them that they were eliminated.
Next time: The teams go to Ghana and have trouble in taxis.
