Last week on “The Amazing Race,” Season 17, week 3 Michael and Kevin finished last, but it was a non-elimination leg of the race. The father and son team were thrilled to remain in the race despite Michael having become sick during one of the more physical challenges of the last leg of “The Amazing Race.”
Jonathan and Conner won the last leg of the race, and even Gary and Mallory upped their game and finished early.
This week Nick and Vicki needed to work on communication and Nick needed to keep his temper under control and be more understanding with Vicki.
“The Amazing Race” Challenge week 4
The teams stayed in Daruma and helped paint the primary school which participated in week 3 of the
The teams were sent “from the furnace to the freezer.” They had to fly to the Kiruna, Sweden, drive to the ice hotel and retrieve their first clue. The clue sent them to mush dogs on a short challenge. Their next clue was a detour, and it certainly detoured several of the teams during week 4 of “The Amazing Race.”
The detour choice was to sled downhill in less than 1 minute 58 seconds or use traditional materials to build a kohte, which looks a lot like a tee-pee.
The Pit Stop was on a mountaintop not to far away.
How the teams competed on episode 4 of “The Amazing Race” season 17
Nat and Kat
Nat and Kat booked their an earlier connecting flight to Sweden on the Internet and were one of only four teams that could be accommodated on the earlier connecting flight. Nat and Kat remained among the teams in the lead. They chose the sled race at the detour. Kat went over the side, ruining her running time. She had to start over, which threatened to move them out of a slight lead.
Gary and Mallory
Mallory had a good start to the dog sled race, but was too short to reach one of the flags. She had to take another lap, which enabled Brooke and Claire to finish ahead of them, but Gary and Mallory managed to regain their momentum despite Mallory having to re-do the downhill sledding course.
Brook and Claire
Brooke and Claire were hooked up with the earlier flight by Nat and Kat and made it into the Arctic Circle among the first teams. Brooke and Claire took the sleds downhill with no problems and kept themselves toward the front of the pack. They have been strong contenders in this race up to and including week 4 of “The Amazing Race,” season 17.
Michael and Kevin
Michael and Kevin were the first to decide to try to find an earlier flight. They teamed up with Mallory and Gregory and got on the earlier flight out of Sweden. They met their speed bump when they went into the ice warehouse. They had to sit on ice chairs for 10 minutes, and Kevin was still in soccer shorts he wore in Ghana.
Despite having had a road block Michael and Kevin made it to the dog sleds first and completed the task first. They fell behind a little at the detour when they chose to build a kohte.
Jill and Thomas
Jill and Thomas still have The Express Pass, which allows them to skip a leg of the race, but Thomas wanted to hold it from the start. They ended up in last place early in the race and lost their place on the trail to the dog sleds which made Thomas irritable, but he knew he still had the Express Pass which could pull them out of the hole.
Jill and Thomas decided to use their Express Pass when they reached the sled race and were falling further behind. They pulled it out just in time. If they had waited too much longer they would have risked losing this leg of “The Amazing Race,” season 17.
Nick and Vicki
Nick and Vicki did not make the early flight, but they made easy work of the challenge and detour. Their physicality really helped them pull ahead in this challenge when it came to managing and riding the dog sled or the downhill course. They were one of the few teams that didn’t have trouble on the downhill sled.
They got along a lot better this week, too.
Chad and Stephanie
Chad and Stephanie ran next to last for most of the race. They were getting along until the sled race. Chad was confident because he has tried extreme sports. He got mad at Stephanie because she crashed and was afraid of the steep course. They got restarted on the detour by building a kohte, which they seemed to do more efficiently than any other team that constructed a kohte.
Katie and Rachel
Katie and Rachel were running with the back of the pack, when one of the sleds went off the side of a mountain they switched to building.a kohte. They ran a serious risk of losing, but were working neck and neck against Jonathan and Conner.
Conner and Jonathan
Conner and Jonathan finished first last week, but they struggled this week. Unable to get on the early connecting flight to Sweden Jonathan and Conner lagged behind throughout the race. Their most debilitating delay came when they couldn’t make it through the downhill sledding course and switched tasks on the detour.
Winner of week 4, leg 4 of “The Amazing Race 17.”
Nat and Kat reached The Pit Stop first, winning this leg of the race.
Gary and Mallory finished second for the second week in a row.
Brook and Claire came in third.
Michael and Kevin finished fourth.
Thomas and Jill finished fifth using their Express Pass.
Nick and Vicki finished sixth, their best finish yet.
Chad and Stephanie finished seventh.
Katie and Rachel finished eighth.
Jonathan and Conner came in last place. They ended the race on the day they should have been at Princeton graduation. Of course, they sang away their blues and appeared happy to have participated in the race in lieu of graduation.
