You might think a shopkeep that names his store “The Bad Wife” is less than pleased with his spouse. But in fact, the opposite is true.
The owner of the Park Slope bodega recently rechristened ‘The Bad Wife,’ Jim Lee, told the Brooklyn Paper “It’s a joke.”
For the last 25 years the Lees have run the JH Marketplace on Seventh Avenue between Eleventh and Twelfth Streets. They recently took over the storefront next door and are in the process of expanding. Besides fruits and vegetables, the expanded store will carry flowers, plants, and Asian dry goods.
“She’s my best friend” said the affable Jim Lee. The bodega owner explained to Brooklyn Paper reporter Joe Anuta that the name stems from a long running gag between the two spouses.
“She’s the queen. Park Slope women are strong,” Lee stated.
Anuta reported “most customers know Lee and his wife as the ultimate example of an affable Mom and Pop.” However, he interviewed several customers that were not fans of the new name.
Apparently being the owner of a store doesn’t afford you the right to a personality in some people’s eyes. Maybe Lee should change the name to ‘Fruits, Vegetables, Beer, Cigarettes, Flowers, Deli, Grocery.’
However, he might run into some copyright issues with that one. That name already appears on nearly every block in NYC.
