When a parent first starts homeschooling many usually start by setting up schedules that are similar to many of the public schools. It can be very difficult to get out of the school mindset. Since you hare homeschooling there is really no reason to have your children stick to time limits when it comes to learning different subjects. There are many benefits to avoiding a time frame on your homeschooling.
The first benefit is that your child will have the ability to really master a subject. In many public school environments it makes sense to set a time limit since there is so much to get done. Also in public schools they have many children to teach and in most homeschool environments you have fewer children to focus on. If you find your child is struggling with a particular topic take time, and help them until they get it. It’s important to keep in mind that it is ok to spend an entire day working on math if they have a hard time grasping a topic. You can cover the additional information the next day.
Homeschooling is very flexible, and that is one of the many joys of being able to teach your child at home. It can also help to keep your child from being bored as well. Some children pick up the lessons very well in particular subjects. For example if your child is advanced in language arts, and finish their work quickly, spend less time on it. Some lesson plans may actually need forty five minutes to help children grasp the topic. For other subjects they may only need about fifteen to twenty minutes. That is another benefit, you can move quickly or slowly through the curriculum depending on your child’s ability.
Not have such a restive time frame also helps to keep learning fun and enjoyable. Helping kids learn to develop a love of learning is one of the best gifts that you can give to your child. This does not mean that you can not teach children the benefit of getting work done within a particular time frame. They will need to learn to follow a schedule when the entire the work world, but this can come when they get older. You can set a time limit for your school day however. If they are struggling with a topic they will need to do additional work on their own, for extra practice.
