THE MOST REWARDING PART OF OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS
Can there be any better way to earn your living than by working for yourself? To own your own business, that’s the American dream. Fortunately, for most of us, that dream can be realized with little to no effort. Owning your own business can be the most rewarding accomplishment you will ever realize. There are more upsides to owning your own business than there are downsides. We have been in business for ourselves for over ten years now. Together, my wife and I own and operate at least five little businesses. We know from experience the rewards to be gained from owning your own business.
There are several aspects of owning your own business that many would consider positive. Things like the ability to set your own hours make them long or make them short. You work for yourself and you will have the freedom to take the time off you really want. You are able to do what you want when you want. Never having to miss another birthday, holiday, special event or anything that you really want to be at, is a great benefit, but is it the most rewarding?
Typically these things are not good enough to make us “veterans” call them real rewards. They are wonderful benefits, but the real reward comes from other sources. We experience the most rewarding part of owning our own business every time we bring in a new customer or book a new event or speak with a new bride. For us, the absolute most rewarding part of owning our own business is the sense of accomplishment.
We have several small businesses we operate from our home; a Quality consulting firm, a Bed & Breakfast, officiating at weddings, making photographic DVDs and making baby bonnet mementos and keepsakes. Most of these are related in one-way or another but they are indeed separate entities, each with it’s own tax return. None of them make enough today for me to quit my day job, but all of them continue to reward us for our efforts.
You might think the biggest reward one could get from owning their own business is the income that is untouched by a company’s accounting department. That is a real benefit but the absolute most rewarding aspect of any one of our businesses is a happy customer. When we get comments sent back to us in the mail or on the Internet where one of our brides says, “Thank you once again Gary! You and your wife are great people!” or
When one of our guests at our B&B responds with;
“This has been a wonderful unexpected Dream of an experience. Your warm welcome, the greetings from Deogie (D.O.G.) & the inviting pleasure one would expect from a top drawer “B&B experience” was all ours at this “deep in the woods” escape from the daily grind. SUPERB! Service, Accommodations & hospitality #1 “Right down to the T.P.”
Those are the real rewards. It does our heart good to know we have made even the smallest difference in someone’s life. It gives us that feeling of accomplishment that we may not be able to get, working for someone else. When we make people this pleased through operating one of our small businesses we know they are delighted because of us and us alone. That is where the real reward comes from. Comments like these only make us want to get better and better.
In summary, the most rewarding part of owning your own business is knowing that whatever happens it is due entirely to your own efforts; we made it happen. We made someone happy and we did it in a way no one else would have done. This is the one and only true sign of success. Not the money, not the growth in business, not the repeat customers; those are all positive. But the real success lies in being a success. Being a success means you have left a lasting impression with one of your customers. That is the very best reward from owning any business.
